It's all over. The corprate world destroyed the wsop. The Rio as a property failed big time, don't believe me ask anyone in the buisness that runs a poker room. One bathroom, expensive food, and a room that looked like.....you guessed it a BINGO HALL. I miss Binions, I miss when Jack ran Binions, I miss the cheese burgers at Binions. I won't miss the Rio and the damn Bingo hall they call a card room. Screw the rio they can keep the damn WSOP name, cause thats all it is, it's no longer the most prestigeous poker tournament.
Rio you get a big F on the WSOP '05 and everyone that participated in the events will tell you. -------------------- |

I only attended the 2004 and 2005 WSOP and based on those two trips, I agree. When I didn't qualify for the ME this year, I saw little reason to go to the Rio and played ALL of my side games elsewhere. I actually like the Rio as a casino but I was disappointed by the kluge and the Bingo hall. It looks like the WSOP is too big to have at Binion's and due to the numbers, it would appear that the Bingo hall is here to stay (at least for a while). IMO, if they aren't going to have it at Binion's then at least have it on the Strip.

This is only what I have heard so please take with a grain of salt, but isn't the WSOP supposed to be held at Caeser's next year? Not that it'll change anything but it'll likely be able to handle the volume at least somewhat better than the Rio. |

I hadn't heard that but while I was out there this year I asked a Caesar's employee if they had a poker room and they said they were building the most state-of-the-art poker room in Vegas (in true Caesar's fashion). They said it was supposed to be complete around November IIRC. The Tournament of Champions is to be played there Nov. 6-8. Caesar's would be the perfect location IMO, can't get much more centrally located than that.

But really, what do you expect for an event with 7,000 poker players? No matter who hosts, it's not going to be "cozy" anymore. All things considered, I think the staff did a pretty good job and I"m sure they'll learn from their mistakes for next year. As for Caesars, it's a big rumor at this point. I'd bet it's true, but no announcement yet. |

They announced during the event this year that it would be held at the Rio again next year.

fer cryin' out loud...where exactly would Binions place all these players? Outside? In the parking lot out back? And what cardroom anywhere can host that big a crowd? No matter what, the room is going to look like a ballroom, convention room, or god forbid, a bingo hall.
I was at the Rio during the WSOP this year and I think they did a damn fine job. Yes, there were mistakes, but those will be corrected. You miss when Jack ran Binions? How old are you, Kid? Kjo, first off I highly doubt you where there, because every player I know was complaining. And if you where there the obviously you didn't know any better. Check out my same post at cardplayers forum, not one person disagreed. The only people that think the Rio did a fine job are new people to the poker world, and they don't know anything about the tradition of the WSOP. Benny Binion used to take damn good card of his poker players, and Jack still does in Mississippi.
How many WSOP have you been to at Binions by the way???? It's not a matter of housing the amount of people at Binions it's the fact that "The tradition has been ripped out of the tournament, and replaced with vendors" Still Don't Buy it...ask Doug Daltin who runs Bellagio's poker room, ask Edna his wife that runs the Aladdin. Or best ask Doyle, Daniel, Dewey, or any of the other pros. how happy they where about the fact that the Rio got rid of their mixed game, due to lack of interest from the mainstream. Settleing for the performance the Rio put on is BAD FOR POKER, AND BAD FOR THE POKER PLAYER!!!! -------------------- |

Guess not.
My point- the Rio may have had their problems but given the circumstances and that its their FIRST year hosting, that is to be expected. It is also to be expected that they will learn from their mistakes next year. But given the sheer magnitude of the task at hand, I'd say they did a fine job. But poker players love their bi tchin', moanin' and complainin', as I've noticed from, oh, every time I've ever played poker. I'll be sure to ask Doug Dalton and his wife Edna next time I see them about all this. Any other names you want to drop, and spell wrong? Its a new world out there, Kid. If you just want to complain about the Rio sucking then more power to you; the rest of us will keep some perspective. Eli QUOTE(zach jiganti @ Oct 20 2005, 08:03 PM) |

I've never been to the WSOP but I know that Negraneau has complained about the WSOP the last two years. That includes the year he was WSOP player of the year and Cardplayer of the year so it wasn't like he just had sour grapes.
As for whether any casino could handle the magnitude of the players the last two years, that's another question. However although I have no first hand experience at the WSOP, i'd have to agree that tradition has been replaced by vendors. The Nature of success is that tradition will be replaced by the want to accumulate as much wealth as you can out of your successful idea. With the incredible growth of poker the last couple years, which was started by the WSOP, you couldn't not see it coming. -------------------- From Guns and Roses' Paradise City:
Rags to riches or so they say were all fighting for the fortune and fame it's all a gamble when it's just game you treat it like a capitol crime, everybodys doing there time Sounds a lot like poker |

This type of attitude is gonna render internet poker illegal. Just wait until the casinos start pushing for it.
