It hasn't been picked up for release so it could be a while. I've seen it though, it's pretty bad.

Exactly what makes it so bad? Bad acting? Depth? Not enough on the games? For me it's hard to imagine the kid from "Goodfellas", "Spider" being much of an actor, especially to portray a complicated, tormented, genius.

Bad everything. Michael Imperioli was OK enough- he's a good actor, if you haven't seen him on The Sopranos- but there was nothing to work with. Bad writing, poor construction, no conflict or drama, and the acting in general was overcooked. I should qualify this by saying I only saw the first hour, but it just wasn't good. Director had a severe case of "first movie-itis"- lots of fancy shots very derivative of everything Scorcese.

Biggest problem was that there just wasn't any drama. It went through the motions of Stuey's life but it was just never interesting. It started to get a little better when the movie shifted to Vegas (about halfway through), but it just wasn't enough, and then Mr. Miyagi shows up in a hilariously miscast part. I couldn't take it.

And there was very little poker, at least in the half I saw. There's an embarassingly shot poker scene in the beginning and not much else.

One of those well intentioned but poorly made movies from a first-time director. The story should have been much more dramatic and interesting given the subject matter.

Thanks K-J. I was wondering about that movie. Insightful. Shame it appears to be so fouled up since he was such and interesting guy. Guess it wasn't a big interest for the studio. Maybe I'll still catch it someday.--DMJ

That was the biggest problem with the movie- they have a potentially very interesting story to tell but they just couldn't pull it off.
