Question about legality, Alex Ptek, 31. Dec 2003 11:22

If you are heads up against an opponent, and he moves all-in...

Is it legal for you to flips your cards over before deciding whether or not to call? If it is legal, I think it could be an interesting attempt to get a read on your opponents hand by seeing his reaction to your cards.

Thanks,
Alex

They have made it against the rules in tournaments but it is still acceptable in most live games - except where they have WPT generation floormen.

I don't think revealing your hand should be against the rules, as long as everyone in the hand has a chance to see the cards. It's just a way to extract a tell from someone. That's like making it illegal to watch someone's face as the flop hits. Oh well, just my opinion. Thanks for the response.

If that's your opinion Alex, then you must also be opposed to the rule against string bets?

I think it is a cheap shot. Sometimes turning your cards over can mean that you are folding and showing your hand. In the WPT they state that your hand is dead if anyone else sees your cards before all action is completed. If you ever see Hellmuth, Ivey, Duke, or Moneymaker do it then I think it's ok.

I am not sure on this but do remember reading an article about it in cardplayer. The article stated that most tournaments will not allow it. Like I said though this is just from memory limit play could be different or I could be flat out wrong.
