Raise all-in with JJ?, Jordan, 31. Dec 2003 08:02

I've been playing and doing quite well in the PokerStars Single Table 20 dollar buy-in tourneys for the last few months and I'm still wondering about the best way to play these sorts of hands. I'm on the button with JJ and a PATHETIC EP (very weak standards pre-flop and poor post flop play as well) player has simply doubled the blinds. It gets folded around to me and I know I have the best hand and contemplate flat-calling and watching for overcards, re-raising a good amount, or going all-in for the rest of my chips. At this point I had about 1300 in chips and his raise made it 100. I decided to go all-in and got it heads up vs. my opponent who held AQ. He hit his hand and I was left packing. Now I know I made the mathematically correct play in getting all-in with the best hand, but I'm not sure it was the right play. In single table tournaments, what would you have done and why?

A) Flat called the raise and watched for overcards and folded to post flop action

B) Re-raised

C) Go All-In

Thanks.

How early in the tournament was it? If it was early, I would've just called, that hand is relatively easy to play post-flop, PLUS you have position. In the single table tourneys, I don't play anything but the nuts early on, I wait until there's 5 people left, make a move, and slide into the money comfortably. Of course, all this is contingent on the amount of players left in the game.

yeah it was still fairly early, i think there were maybe 6 players left but the blinds were up to 25/50 (still not big) but moving up.....i guess i was quick to go all-in something i normally don't do w/o at least Queens

I never see the point in risking coin flip all-ins with bad players early on - you are just playing the game on their terms and neutralising your advantage - it's one thing if they go all in and you have a lot of money in the pot but I never initiate this sort of play until I'm in the money. I'm confident that if I wait I will have much safer chances to increase my stack against a worse player.

I just played a NL SnG tonight on paradise where the first two hands I played were KK and AKs. I lost with both to bad beats from true maniacs at the river, but as I hadn't gone all in I was able to take the 250 chips I had left and build it up until I won it pretty easily in the end. Would they have folded if I'd gone all-in? I can't say for sure but given that one of them called my 600 bet in the 3rd hand (on KK) with A9 o/s I wouldn't want to take a bet on his rationailty!

Kinda silly to risk all your chips with not such a great hand. You were only a coin toss, you weren't that much of a favorite, and keep in mind he probably would only call the all-in with something reasonable (and reasonable for a lousy player includes AQ). A reraise of about 3x his raise would likely suffice in getting it heads up.

I don't like all-in here. I would re-raise to 200 or 300. If he raised with a poor hand, he may fold right there. If he raised with AA or KK, he'll probably go all-in and you'll have to make a tough laydown. If he had what he had, he'll call and you'll get to see the flop AND what he does on the flop (you have position) before committing your chips.

I don't like the raise to 200 or 300.....

The worst situation in NL SnG is playing a pocket pair with an overcard on the board for a large pot. You either want to push or call here. I don't like pushing since its still early and frankly why take the risk as others ahead have pointed out.

Whats even worse about raising to 200-300 is that you're EXPECTED to make a decent raise, which would be a good 300 more chips on the flop so his EP check gives you no information. by raising to this amount you're pretty much guaranteed to risk 1/2 to 1/3 of your stack on a hand you have no idea is good, unless the board is low ... when he can still beat you with AA-QQ and if he hits a set on a low board... there's no way to see it coming and you're likely going to be sent packing.
