| My department at work has decided to get together for a Poker game this Saturday night. There are 8 of us, but it will prob only be a 6 handed game, 7 max. 6 out of the seven that are probably coming, have never played texas holdem or have no poker experience at all. Most of them know the hand rankings of poker and the basic concept of betting, but I will be the one experienced NL player at the table. Some of them have been watching the WSOP and celebrity poker on TV. We plan to play for fun for about 30 minutes so they can learn the basics of the game and betting structure. After we get warmed up, Everyone has agreed to buy-in for $50 for a PL game. We may decide to run Dealers choice for a bit, a few of them like 5 card stud and Omaha which is fine with me. None of these people ever play cards for money (or much money), and don't have near the experience at poker as I do. I have played with bad players, and fairly new players before, but never first timers. I am not sure how to approach this game. Can I expect them to be tight? Can i expect them to try to pull off many bluffs, due to them seeing it on TV a lot. If I put them on a bluff and call do you think they will bluff to the river? Or will they give up the bluff if I keep calling? My initial thought was I am going to clean up at this game, but now I am thinking that how am I ever going to put them on reads when they could be on completely random stuff. I think I will play pretty tight for the first hour or so to try and find out how each one of them play. I have a feeling none of them will be consistent, it is going to be hard for me to know when they bluff or when they have it. What are obvious tells to look for in first timers? Shaking hands when they do have it....will they be looking away from my eyes when they bluff, or try to play tough guy and stare at me? What expressions should I look for on their faces when they get their hole cards, and when the flop comes....I will be watching them and not the board. Can I expect them to be chasing flushes and straights? I am trying to know what to expect from inexperienced or first time NLHE players and any advice is greatly appreciated. | ||

| You are right to be worried about what they have. I just played in a game with 2 newbies and 1of them won. He won because no one ever got a read on him. If they have no idea about the concepts, it's hard to read them. They won't raise preflop so it makes it hard to put them on a hand, especially when they call you down. If a newbie raises, I suggest to get out of the way until you can get some read on them. They won't trap hardly at all and can be beaten with high kickers. This is just from my experience, which isn't that much. Good luck and make the game fun for them so they come back! Brent | ||

| I played in a game last night that had a few newcomers to PL. I think you are worrying too much about it in this case. The game will likely be one where you can bet for value a lot more often because they will call more often. Also, don't bluff at all because someone with 2nd or third pair might call just because they have something. Bottom line, play the good hands that you normally would play and limp with a lot of small pairs and suited connectors. These are the hands that you can trap with when they hit. It is likely you will be one of the only one's doing a lot of pre-flop raising, so you can get away with those limps. | ||

| Flop: I have played in a bunch of these recently and I think I can add some helpful advice. Here are my observations: 1. NEVER run bluffs at them. They are oblivious to what is going on around the table and they are not thinking about your hand. They are thinking only about whether they have a good hand or a bad hand and they are going to hope it holds up if they think its good. So don't bother trying to bluff them out. 2. Per the above, dont bother trying to read them. Although after a while, some obvious tells start to emerge. Like asking if a flush beats a straight and stuff like that. No kidding, I guarantee you will hear a few of those. 3. Expect some bad beats. 4. Also expect to see some hands hold up more often than not against a bunch of callers that you normally would expect to get beat. Lots of players calling with bottom pairs and no kickers, stuff like that. 5. Beginners almost always chase inside straights and backdoor flushes. Expect to see a lot of that too. They aren't thinking about odds. Good luck. Dont expect to "clean up". But its really hard to lose a lot of money unless you take a few nasty beats. I always make money in these games but rarely as much as I think I should. | ||

| Thank you all for the advice. I intend to do good, but probably won't clean up, being that there isnt much money involved and that we are all friends and I really want to make it more about fun and enjoyment than trying to take thier money. If I win a few bucks off of a few of them great, most of them are coming expecting to lose their $50, which is nice. | ||

| Help them out where-ever you can and make sure everyone has fun. Than casually suggest that you get together on a regular basis. Don't worry about reads or the game in general on your first night playing together, instead try to make sure every one has fun and wants to make it a regular thing. A regular PL game against newbies could be a great way to build a good bankroll. Mark You can shear a sheep many times, but skin him only once. | ||

| I'd expect them to start out with much worse starting hands than an experienced player. Any King, Any Ace, sometimes even any Queen. My advice would be to show your cards the first hand you have the opportunity to, just to entice the other to do the same later on (or even right then). You'll see guys turning over all sorts of junk. Good luck! Goat | ||
