A weird day/night/morning at Bellagio, Mark Gregorich, 30. Dec 2003 16:35

I played in a bizarre $80-160 hold'em game yesterday at Bellagio. While I'm generally not a long session player, I managed to put in 21 hours in this game. Coincidentally, there was a player in the game who was playing hold'em for the first time (although he had seen it on tv). He managed to see EVERY flop from 3pm Monday until 7:30 am Tuesday, when he finally went all in and lost. Unbelievably, he played the entire session on only $5000 (I thought he should have lost much more than that).

A couple of highlights:

* Our friend makes two pair (sevens and threes) to beat someone's pocket aces midway through the session. The loser exclaims "How could you play that hand?" ... Well, it was only 250 in a row at that point.

* I make the most pathetic bluff attempt of my life, betting 66 into a board of KKJJ3. There was one opponent (guess who), and I thought he may just have Q high, so I thought it was worth a shot. He called me with 77. Nice hand. Take it.

* At one point in the session, the tourist's wife and a couple friends stopped by. A tense moment of uneasiness amongst the other players ensued, as the spouse tried to convince her husband to attend a show. Fortunately, the gambling urge prevailed, and the game continued.
Later on, a friend sat behind our friend to watch him play. As the tourist was seated to my immediate right (This serves as the instructional portion of this post), I was able to listen to their conversation.
In one hand (a 5 way raised pot), the flop came down 489. The tourist remarked to his friend, "I need a 5 to make a straight," as he called a double raise on the flop. A 10 fell on the turn, presumably completing the straight draw as well. One player bet and our friend raised, and was paid off all the way. At the showdown, he turned over the straight as advertised - but he was holding J7! Hmmmm.

I finally quit about 7:45 in the morning. First time I've played hours like that in a couple years. I struggled all day (the tourist showed me trips or two pair about 15 times), but managed to cash out with a decent win.

Nice to know that if I ever make it to the 80/160 tables, some of my old "friends" from the 4/8 games at Commerce will be there.

Great story.
