4 Color Deck, WhamBam, 30. Dec 2003 13:56

I am intrigued by the use of the 4 color deck. Flush draws are easily spotted, and its a easier to remember the suits of your hole cards. Its just one less thing to worry about IMHO. My only concern is that when I play my regular game, I may affect my board reading skills having relied on the "crutch" that is the 4 color deck Is this a concern for anybody else, and does anyone out there flip between the 2 & 4 color decks regularly?

Still don't know what you're talking about. Are there decks with more than red/black?

Yes on-line play usually gives you the option to show each suit in a different color.

I have (sadly) only played in a live game twice since I started playing online (and I almost immediately started using the 4-color decks)...unfortunately - yes - it did take me a few hands to make the adjustment back to the normal red/black deck...I don't think it cost me - just took me a couple of extra seconds to read hands without the four color benefit...watching all of the poker on TV also obviously helps...

Fortunately - with the cards larger - and with most casinos using cards which emphasize the suit - it didn't talke long to readjust...

I AM hopeful that with the explosion of online play a few casinos may offer 4-color tables at the lower limit games...

Mr. Caro - you ready to try that push again?? ;-)

I'll try to be the voice of tradition here and say, with all due respect, are you kidding? Is nothing sacred in a cardroom? And is it that difficult to tell the suits apart?

I would be very pissed if a cardroom I frequented started using 4-color decks. Some things just ain't right.

After playing with a full four color deck I like it . I wish the steel and concrete cardrooms would use them too

I'm with KJo. Keep it the way it is.

I tried that 4-color deck and to me it looked more confusing! Not that I ever thought that it was confusing before!!

Oh well, different strokes for different folks. No big deal really.

I wasn't advocating using them at ALL the tables - just have an option at some tables...

And as far as the person who asked was it so hard to tell the difference...no - it's not...

But why stick to something old just in the name of "tradition" when a change can make a game better...I realize most people like things the old way - it's safe...but you can't tell me that a two color deck is EASIER to play with than a four-color one...especially in a game where the individual suits do matter...

Does it take some time to get used to - yes - all things new do...but I wouldn't be unhappy if I NEVER had to play with a standard two color deck again...

And if tradition is so good - perhaps we should go back to the suits found on the original playing cards (money - batons - chalices - and swords) - all in one color...

Change...it CAN be a good thing... ;-)

I vote we resume using the suit of EAGLE that was introduced in the early days of american card playing. And introduce the 5 color deck. ~(:^P)

Funny, I've never once seen big number cards used in a real table poker room I've played in. I've only played in Reno, Nevada.

I love 4 color decks online and have no problem adjusting to 2 color decks in real life. B+M games are much slower so you have more time to take stuff in.

Good times,
