Im a complete idiot!!!, Eman, 30. Dec 2003 13:12

As you all know, Ive mostly been playing Omaha8. But i decided to play in a NL multi table Holdem tourney. Havent played a multi in quite a long while. Ive had some great success in UB's NLHE tourneys, 6-7 final tables, 1st place once. So im feeling confident. Im playing solid poker. 17 players left out of 190. Im in 3rd place with like 18,000 chips. Lots of blinds stealing, as the table is very tight. Blinds were something like 400/800 UTG (slightly more chips than me) opens for a raise of about 2000. Im in the cutoff with AKs. I reraise him the pot to hopefully take down the pot. He calls. Flop comes:
9 4 2 with two of my suit. He bets out the minimum 800.
i raise him 3000 (leaving me with around 8000). He reraises me allin. Itll cost me 8000 to call to win over 37000. At this point my read was either 99 - QQ. I knew i was behind. I doubt he had AA or KK, cause he probably would have reraised me preflop. . But i assured myself that i have 15 clean outs. It i fold im left with 8000 in chips and a battle to stay alive till the final table, but no real shot at winning the whole thing. I called. No help and I busted out in 17 th place after playing what I thought was perfect poker for over 2.5 hours. He had JJ.

I shouldnt have been so aggressive with AKs. I was in good shape, all i needed to do was not get involved with any of the big stacks and wait it out. I would have easily coasted to the final table in the top 5. But NO. .i had to play this hand like a jackass. O well. Back to the Omaha8 table.

I know my reraise after the flop was a horrible play. After my first attempt of taking down the pot preflop didnt work, I shouldnt have tried it again. But I did. And now i was in a sticky situation. At this point, 8000 to call with the pot laying you over 4 to 1, but risking being busted out this late. Was that an idiotic call?

If your read was correct (as it was) you could have just flat called the 800 and seen if an Ace, King, or Spade came off on the turn. If it didn't and he bet again you could just fold. I'm sure that's obvious now but I can also understand you trying to push him off his hand.

my flop raise was more of an attempt to push him off his hand. But know that it didnt work preflop, and with the board that low, i should have know he would continue playing his overpair. Bad play on my part.
