Stud 8 - Toss and turn, 94o, 30. Dec 2003 12:22

I'm familiar w/ Stud 8 or better - this is a new version for me - stud 8 where you are dealt 4 cards you toss one and turn one up for your starting card. I was told the idea is to get the already loose players to play more starting hands. What I am curious on is how does this change my play - basically I should be even tighter and more aggressive but what becomes the cut off now for starting hands.

Also, I was curious - if you are dealt say Ah 2d 3d 4d which do you pitch which do you turn?

I play a similar game at home that we call "roll your own" 7 stud, we usually play low in the hole is wild.

I tend to roll the high card if I have two low ones (A23 i'd roll the A), which sometimes advertises strength, and also makes the chances of you getting a lower 7th street card slim.

Not sure how to answer you on the toss portion....

If you're playing without wilds, rolling a low card makes sense, because it may help you with position and of course makes everyone guess at what you've got underneath.

I am obviously no stud expert, but for what it's worth!

I have played this game before. I'm certainly not an expert at it, but I did do well when I played (in Wash. state cardrooms). My starting strategy was to basically only play trips, aces with a low card, or three cards to a low straight or low flush. I folded hands like 237, as someone figured to have a better low start.

For your second question, I would keep the 234 of diamonds.

Interesting- care to expound? Is the baby straight flush draw that good? Or does the strength of hiding knowledge of a missing Ace gain you that much?

Why Toss and Turn? Play Stud 435!, Harold Pierce, Jr., 31. Dec 2003 18:01

The objective of this variation is provide the player with
a better starting hand. However, why toss and turn? Why not
just deal the three hole cards and 4th street as the door card
to start the hand? This variation is called seven card stud
435 and has not been described in any book or on any poker
website.

I have done detailed calculations on stud 435 for the probabilities
of being dealt 20 types of starting hands for high-low and have
compared the potential for action (PFA) of stud 435 to that of traditional
stud. For stud 435 high-low the PFA is 65.5%a and for traditional stud
the PFA only 26.2%. The PFA for stud 435 means you have a 65.5% chance
of being dealt a decent and playable starting hand.

If you would like a copy of these calculations for stud 435 and
traditional stud as well as pre-flop decision lookup tables for
Texas Hold'em send your e-mail address to: 74563.30@compuserve.com.
The lookup tables have just come out the Texas BBQ poker pit and are
smokin'! Get'em while they're Hot!
