Which of the following for are worth buying...

Theory of Poker
Hold em Poker
Hold em Poker for advanced players
Tournament Poker for adv. players.

I've been looking into it- a few say all but im not sure i need each one.

I have been playing for about 9 months and have caught on very quickly. I tend to be the best card player at the many home games with many different people who have been playing longer than me and I want to broaden my knowledge of the game.

Thanks

Ok to be more narrow if you dont want to buy all of those,

Definately buy theory of poker... thats a no question in my eyes... but really look at your skill level for the others.

Well yeah. I'd say "Real Poker 2" by Roy Cooke is a must have. :)

Seriously though, I've only recently read it and it was great but I wonder how many years of hard knocks it would have saved me if I had read it early on.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record: All are worth buying. That said, "Tournament Poker" is obviously a tourney book. Won't help you at all for ring games. Also, "Hold 'Em" is really a beginner-intermediate book. If you're very familiar with the game, I'd skip it for HEFAP.

...And finally, I don't think any of these books are truly for beginners. If you're a novice learning to play HE, I'd get Ken Warren, Lou Krieger, or Lee Jones' books.

I too will sound like a broken record in that the three that I have read are excellent...we are at a similar place in our career (I am a lifelong home game player who has been serious for about 15 months)...

I opted NOT to buy "Hold Em" because I had already read Hellmuth - Warren - and Jones...when I hit HEFAP - I had little problems with it...

If I have anything to add - it would be to read - play - then RE-READ...after my second reading of the tourney book - something clicked - and I now have a positive EV in my low buy-in internet tourneys...

That being said - I do know that not everyone is sold on the Sklansky books...some people feel he has omitted some details and really should be considered writing to an intermediate player...

Personally I found them all to be excellent reads...

Other suggestions...

Hellmuth is a beginner book (the title is a mis-nomer) - but ALWAYS good for keeping me grounded...I keep going back to it...

Lee Jones - if you have a grasp on the game - it CAN be skipped - but if you get a chance to read it - do so anyway...

Ken Warren - the weakest of the beginner books IMO - but some GREAT stats...

And obviously SuperSystem by Doyle Brunson...this should be part of everyone's learning...now there are some things he says which are - shall I just say are outdated - but he has forgotten 100x more about the game than I will EVER learn - and you HAVE to read this book...but I'd read more Sklansky first...
