Flop - 3 suited cards, Blazman, 30. Dec 2003 11:24

Hi I have been playing at party poker for about 3 weeks. I have noticed that a LOT of flops come up 3 suited cards, so I decided to count. I played 211 hands and 23 times the flop came up 3 suited cards, that is about 11% of the time. To me this seems incredibly high. Does anyone know what the odds are of the flop coming out 3 suited cards?

Thanks
Blaz

12/51 x 11/50

I come up with about 5.2%

but I will give the generic repsone to this... some 200 hands is a very vrey nominal sample size to get any realistic statistic on this topic.

Well using that formula wouldn't you use
13/52 x 12/51 x 11/50

in which case it's about 1.2% of the time

in that case you are using a specified suit... when you calculate the 13/52 you are in essence calculating the probablity of say 3 SPADES, you would not ad the 13/52 if just calculating the percentage of all 4 suits

If we disregard any of the hole cards (say you are a spectator watching the game) then there will be C(13,3)=286 ways of flopping three suited cards of any given suit.

To take into account any of the four suits, we multiply by four 286x4=1,144. The total possible flops is C(52,3)=22,100.

Therefore, the odds of flopping three suited cards is 1,144/22,100=.0518 making it a 5.2% chance
