I haven't been playing long (6 months) reading the books, playing a lot blah blah I'm doing ok at ring nl or pl tournaments but multi table tourneys are kicking my tail. I play solid and have made it through 50% of crowd but I never seem to get a stack going. I'm not around long enough or never seem to sit at a table where I can get away with blind stealing so I'm stuck with playing good hands and hoping. Any advice is appreciated. Reading most of these posts remind me of how very little I know about poker. Thank you.

Once the tournament gets to the middle stages, you have to begin to be less selective and more aggressive to stay alive. I usually begin to get nervous when my stack is less than 10 BB's of the level we are playing. Now, this is not to say that you start playing crazy, but you need to begin to open raise from MP and LP with hands that you would have mucked early on (like KJo, AJo or ATo and small pairs). Your hope is to steal enough blinds (or win if called) so that you can hang around long enough to get a run of good cards and build a stack.

The key is to remember that you only need to double through a few times to reach the money, so you need to still be selective in your play. But, when the opportunity arises, you need to be aggressive.

I suggest buying Sklansky's Tournament Poker book and getting comfortable with the Gap Concept chapter. That has helped me a lot in my NL multi play.

thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I'm new to the point that I'm still getting top two pairs cracked by sets. Going in short stacked with 150 300 blinds on Ax hitting the top pair then pairing my x card and getting beaten by three 2's is there a point where mucking two pairs is a golden rule? It kills me to see somebody go in with 6 3 or something pair them both and bet them through. Just dumb luck or am I missing something? Thanks again

It all depends on the situation. As for the golden rule with 2 pair vs. a set you're looking for, there isn't one. A set is tough to put someone on because pocket pair is more unlikely than other strong hands. This may go without saying, but always remember the betting sequence of the hand, and be alert when someone has to show a hand. If someone flips up JJ, you can then begin to tell how he/she plays by recalling how they played it. Did they raise? Limp? Reraise? Of course, this is very basic advice, but I don't know exactly where you are as far as skill level and experience goes. Good luck

Thanks for the great tips. I bought the Kslansky book and this morning I won and placed second in consecutive Sand G tournaments. I got very luck stealing blinds. Once stealing with Kx I was called and flopped a set the next time with K7 I was again called and flopped a set of 7's and eventually a FH wouldn't have been lucky if I hadn't tried to steal thank you for the advice and good luck to you happy new year

Well, that's good that you had some success, but keep in mind when you attempt to steal the blinds, you DO NOT want a call. You got very lucky by hitting the flops like you did. Good luck.
