What are people's opinions about calling in the small blind when you hold a marginal hand - something like 103o or 72o ?

10-3off and 7-2off are NOT considered as 'marginal holdings'...they are junk! They should be mucked almost all of the time. That said, For 1/3 the price out of the small blind in a multi-way pot, I would consider calling the extra bet, and how aggressive the big blind may be, is something else I would also consider. How well you play your hands postflop is also an extremely important factor for even making the call a correct one. Generally though, I'd throw it away.

According to Ken warren, the only hands playable in early position are:
A-Qp, A-K,Qs and A-K,Qm where p=pair, s=suited. and m=mixed suits. The chance of being dealt any of these hands is 3.8%. Anything else is mucked.

For No Fold'em Hold'em, Kelly Stanonik's recommended playable hands for early postion are A-9p, A-K,Qs, K-Q,Ts, J=T,9s, A-Km and A-Qm. The chance of being dealt any of these starting hands is 6.6%.

These numbers mean that you will fold ca. 95% of the time pre-flop in early position.

I have compiled Warren's and Stanonik's starting hand sets into pre-flop
decision lookup tables. The starting hands for early, middle and late postions are listed in vertical columns. Under each of the position designations there is a vertical column for pairs, suited and mixed suits starting hands. All starting hand combinations are given, and there are no variable selections such as AXs. When printed out each table fits on one sheet of standard letter size.

If you just played those in early position, isn't that a tad predictable? Then again, if you are playing no foldem limit poker, I can understand that ideology. Just a little too ABC for my tastes.

Regarding 2 7, in limit I'd fold that in SB. However, in no limit, I might consider bluffing with it to mix up my play. Generally, though, I don't advise anyone do anything I do, so its good to fold such garbage.

Depends on the number of limpers, the structure of the blinds (is it only 1/3 to call or 1/2 or more), and whether or not you fear a raise from the BB. If it is only 1/3 to call, then all hands should be played as the impled odds are so high that it is worth it. But, if the BB is a frequent raiser, then you should tighten up significantly. Also, if there are only a few others in the pot (say less than 4), it is an easy fold.

I play NL games. My outlook on the sb is different. I will call it with suited connecters...offsuit connectors or sometimes with hands like 10-8 offsuit. The more inital callers the better. However, I only call to see if I can hit a huge hand on the flop. I will NOT bet if i hit a middle pair or the like. First position is just too lousy for that. As for raising in the sb...top ten only and it's usually a bigger bet to get more people out. first position sucks.
