hi all,

Just wanted to know the advantages of slow playing big
hands late in a tourney. I 've been slowing coasting in
a 50 dollar tourney and guy in front of me has been
slow playing hands like AK suited, AJ offsuited by
just calling. Well long story short, he busted me out
with AJ getting two pairs and i got two pairs with
A4 but i was on blind hand. Does it pay to slow play
big hands when the tourney starts to wind down to
say less than 100 people out of 800? I know the odds
are with u starting out hands. Just a thought.

I think the question of slow play comes most into question based upon your opponents. I would slow play gus hansen.... phil ivey in a heart beat, they are very aggressive and bluff often. Its mainly based upon personnel, get to know your table and what their habits are

No need to slow play a calling station.

The advantage is to trap your opponents. One big problem though. You may find yourself getting trapped if you are not careful. Say you are holding AA and you limp in. Several others do so too. You've just screwed yourself if that flop comes two of a suit or two of a kind show and you don't have the trip. Of course, that can work to your advantage if one of the flop cards in that situation is an ace. In tourney play, you might be able to bust an ignorant player who believes they have the best hand. As high mentioned, study the players. You'll know who you can pull that off with.

Another advantage of slow playing is that in the future you can bluff based on your slow play. Other players might be scared that you are slow playing again and be hesitant to raise or call you. Kind of like when you're the dealer and you get 2 suited cards. You raise in the first round and show some strength. You see the flop and everyone checks to you, and you get to see the turn/river for free most of the time.
