When choosing tables, there are many things to look at before sitting in at one. Are there any obvious flags I can look for that can make one table more profitable than another. 6 vs 10, high pots, high rate of people in the flops, etc...
Thanks

Great question- fast, Here are my thoughts.

The better player you are the more advantage it is to play short-handed - conversly if you are a new player you should stick to 10 handed games. The reason is that in short-handed games there are many more decisions (if you play right) and you play more hands.

As far as selecting on ave. pot size you need to know what kind of player you are. Interestly enough if you are a tight player you should play in a loose game (higher ave pot isze) and if you are an aggressive player you are better off in a tight game.

As far as flags - don't sit down with players who are better than you. It sounds simple enough but most players fail to adhere to that simple axium.

Hi

I do NOT just look at pot size....Often the reason the pots are large is that good aggressive players are doing lots of raising in situations that are correct.....I like loose passive games that have many pre-flop players, but little aggression. It allows me better control, the ability to play more hands and I will win many pots that I wouldn't have had I been playing aggressive players!

Along these same lines, does anyone know the math of how much more the rake takes a dent when you're 6 handed vs. 10? Will a $100 profit session at a 10 handed table be $80 if it were at a 6 handed? It seems small, but the fact that you win more small pots (hence are contributing more to the rake) more often at the 6 handed tables has made me keep my distance, even though I enjoy the more speculative play/post-flop play of them.

Fastbreak--good post

Honestly, I am one to look at average pot size, but that's because at PP, that's the best "first look" at a table...maybe someone can tell me if there's a place at Party that tells me the % of flops seen by players.

Not to pimp anything here, but one of my buddies suggested downloading the pokertracker software...I did and it's pretty good about giving me the data I want--specifically, which players see a ton of flops.

I could write about the benefits of it in another post but will not. In any case, by looking at the table with the highest pot size (I pretty much play $1/$2 and $2/$4 at Party), it's at least a start to go in and see if it's still loose. Sometimes it is, sometimes it tightens--if it does that, it's worth checking the tables up front to see how other tables have changed. If my $1/$2 table that I started at was at a $20 pot average and has declined to $12 or $13, I'm looking back in the lobby for the big money table at that level...alas, you're usually going to have to wait a little longer because others have noticed it too.

About the only reason I'd stay at a lower $ average table is if I know there are a couple of horrific players in there that I see trying to bring pots down with an underpair to the board ("gee those pocket 4's looked so good") or who insist on seeing every hand down to the river only to show up with nada ("wha, my big slick was no good even though no a or k showed up").

Best of luck,

RW

There is another indicator at Party that I like. I will scan the stack sizes at a table and pick one that has only 1 or 2 stacks above the default buy-in of 25 BB. I avoid tables with several obvious winners like the plague. This is especially important to me if I am looking for a NL table. Makes no sense to me to sit at a table where half the players have double the buy-in or more.

That, combined with average pot size usually lands me on a good table.
