no limit tournament - party poker, Russ Rosen, 29. Dec 2003 12:14

Last night i'm playing a $30 no limit hold-em tornament on party poker, with 988 players.

With 12 players left, I am a large stack, with over $100,000 in chips.
I'm on the button with AK. Blinds are $3,000 - $6,000.

An early position player with a large stack raises $15,000. I have maybe $30,000 more chips than he does.

Everyone folds to me, now what should I do?

11th - 20th pays $296, 1st place pays $6520.

I would really appreciate some comments, then I will tell you what happened.

Thanks.

Depends on the player you're playing against.

If you re-raise to say 45k, and is a loose player, then its a guessing game, he could have anything from rockets to AQ to 9's. Problem is the only hand someone MIGHT push in this situation is AQ, and that would be rare with 12 people left, so if he pushes you in you could be in trouble.

You have enough stack that I'd probably just smooth call it and try to hit a flop. If he's got aces or rockets you'll still be burned.

Now if the player had been playing erratically I might push as well.

If there's a reason I haven't made a final table yet let me know =)

avoid large stacks and pound the short stacks, try to move up some spots, if every one is gambling, play tight. If they are all rocks loosen up and start stealing.

FOLD FOLD FOLD
I don't CALL a bet for 1/5 of my stack when winning it only distances me from the field. Losing it brings me closer to the pack.

You have plenty of time to sit and wait until you can be the aggressor. Let him steal, this time.

If your goal was to simply place in the money, go over him all-in, and have some fun with it if he calls (which he won't without AA or KK)

Thanks for the replies. I think the key thing here is that it's better to initiate action rather than respond to it. I came over the top for a large reraise, thinking he would lay it down, but he called with 10-10.

The flop was JJX and I lost a lot of chips there.

Of course, if I'd have hit the flop, I would have won a lot of chips and been smiling.....
