| While on a recent trip to Las Vegas I watched the following hand play out. The game was pot-limit holdem with $25-$50 blinds. A loose player opened the pot for $200 under the gun and several of us folded. He was called by 2 players and the big blind called to make the pot $825. The flop came J-J-2 with two hearts. After the blind checked, the UTG raiser bet $800 and was called only by the BB. The turn card was the king of hearts and now the blind bet $1600. I had been in the game for several hours and had seen the BB pay off loosely in 2 hands. He wasn't an aggressive player who bluffed a lot but it was obvious to me that he wasn't going to be bluffed either. The UTG player thought for about a minute and flat called the $1600 bet. I was trying to figure out what was going on in the hand. I thought it was likely the UTG player held AA or AK undoubtedly with the ace of hearts. I was also sold on the blind having at least 3 jacks and possibly a flush. I looked at the chips in front of each player. The BB had about $4200 left after betting the turn and the UTG player had at least 10 grand left after calling. The river card came the 3 of clubs leaving the board J-J-2-K-3 with hearts. The BB now checked and after some thought the UTG player bet $4500 and was called instantly by the blind. The UTG player turned over KK for kings full and won the pot. The blind left the table and I didn't see his hand. The player in the #1 seat congratulated the winner on setting a great trap for the blind and thus winning all his chips. YUK!!!!!! I felt the UTG player made a HUGE betting error on the turn. When the blind lead a pot sized bet on the turn it should have been clear that it wasn't a bluff. He called a pot sized bet on a J-J-2 board with 2 hearts. The only draw got there on the turn. The BB had every reason to believe 3 jacks or even deuces full was good. When the UTG player makes kings full he MUST set the blind allin NOW. The blind has little choice but to call with all of the hands he is supposed to hold. The error in waiting for the river to raise is that a scare card may arrive that will fold the BB. If, for example, the blind had a flush on the turn and the river double paired or worse brought a 3rd jack the blind would save that last $4200. The story repeats itself if the blind holds 3 jacks and a 4th heart falls on the river. A lot of players get into the habit of waiting for all the cards to be out before springing to life with their big hands. There is a place for this in the game but a failure to recognize when to apply this strategy can cost a lot of money. Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN | ||

Hope is the weak link in many player's games, and once all the cards have been dealt, no player can be expected to call based on whatever potential is inherent in his hand, because at that point the hand's potential has either been realized or it hasn't. So I agree with you that there are times to wait for the river to make sure the storms that can sink your own hand have passed you by, but the failure to make an opponent commit money to their hand when they have way the worst of it can be a costly error. | Brunson talks about similar situations where most people slow play but shouldn't. "Lead into the raiser" is his mantra. I tend to agree with him, especially when the opponent has already represented a big hand, he is likely to raise you if you make a bet, then he's pot committed and will probably go for the rest of the stack if you set him in. | ||
