I am thinking of taking a stab once in a while at playing 10-20 or 20-40 holdem. I usually play 6-12 and have a pretty good command of this game.

I don't have the bankroll to play these games on a daily basis, however, I would love to try it out.

How much money do you bring to these games. I look over at the 20-40 game and it seems that everyone has at least 2 or 3 racks in front of them.

Just curious
thanks

I usually buy into a $20-$40 game with either $800 or $1,000. If you're thinking of giving it a shot, one thing you might want to do is look at the game and wait until you see at least a few players from your $6-$12 game sitting in it. At least that way you'll be familiar with the playing styles of some of your opponents.

If you can't do that, at least look over the game for 20 or 30 minutes and see how many players are calling far too often with hands that don't warrant it. That will give you an idea of the relative softness of the game. If the game is replete with raises, it may be too aggressive for a shot with a limited bankroll, and if that's the case you might want to wait until you find a game with a softer lineup.

I play 20/40 regularly and buy in for $400 in a very agressive game. I will re-load once (another $400) and if I lose the second $400 I'm done for the day. However, on the days when I win it's usually $1,500 plus! With my sytem if you get ahead $800 quit if you lose back $400 and if you get ahead $1,200 quit if you fall back to $800 and so on down th line.

You can expect to lose your first few times when stepping into a higher class with scared money. However, if you play my money system and you will win by minimizing loses and taking profit when you win.. Of couse this assumes you are good enough to hold your own in a given game.

Just set a limit of what you are willing to lose, and make sure to wait for a time when the table at the higher limit looks good. You should be able to point out at least two or three players that you are clearly better than.

I would just buy in for a rack or two and see how it goes. You might also want to pick up a copy of Caffione & Brier's book, "Middle Limit Holdem". It has a lot of specific hand problems which are very illustrative and specific to the limits above 6/12.

One last suggestion, I would "take a shot" after you have a really big day at 6/12. Your confidence will be very high, and you won't be playing scared money if you are freerolling on winnings from a previous day. Every so often you'll have one of those days at 6/12 where you make $1000 or so. Just take those winnings to the higher limit, and use that as your loss limit. Then if you fail and lose it all, all you have really lost is all the time it took you to win and lose a grand and your bankroll is still nicely intact.

Good Luck!

i would think 1000 should be enough to try a 20-40 game. however, you do want to avoid playing scared, especially if the others at the table sense that you are playing beyond your comfort zone. but, playing solid, selectively aggressive poker, 1000 should be enough.
