Should I change my strategy?, h82lose, 29. Dec 2003 07:31 | ||

| I play monthly in a 9 player $100 buy in tourney with some friends. We play limit holdem. I consider myself an average beginner. I have about 5 holdem books under my belt. I feel that i am in the top 2 or 3 playing wise of the 9. Im begining to doubt this, because in the 4 tourneys ive played, i have yet to place in the $$$. I tend to play tight, and like i learned here, make the other players pay to chase when i have a pretty good hand. Im wondering if I should change my strategy to become even tighter, or loosen up a bit. Most of the other 8 players will play ace or king anything, and you will always get a call on any bet. There is no way to steal a bet in this game. I once had q 10 suited in the hole, and the flop was q,q,q giving me 4 of a kind, and got 6 people to call my 1st bet!!!!!! I do a pretty good job not tilting after a bad beat, but it is starting to get frustrating. I know that 4 tourneys is not a sufficient amount of time to base any strategy but was just wondering if anyone here could give me a few pointers, or assure me that i am playing correct, and that its only a matter of time. Thanks in advance! | ||

| Your strategy sounds right. Are you getting drawn out on when you lose or are you getting blinded away? That is an important thing to consider. My next question is this, I know you think your top 2 or 3 but does everyone else? In my home games, my image is very strong and I like to play off of that to intimidate and push people around some times. Brent | ||

| Most of the time im getting drawn out, but the game is somewhat predictable. If no one has flopped at least top pair it will check its way around. Like i said before there is no way to steal a pot, so my theory of betting on a check around would be foolish cause all are going to call. I do notice on raises, we will lose a few people here and there but the chasers still stay in. Was thinking of changing things up and raising when i have top pair, flush draw, or open straight, but like i said chances are ill be the one betting first or it will get checked all the way around. My image is tight, and people are always aware when i play a hand. Most of the time theyll call me right to the river. | ||

| Sounds like you need to be a little more selective when entering and with everyone calling to the river, don't be affraid to throw your hand away if an ace comes on the river. Be sure to follow the saying, get your money in the pot when you have the best of it. With so many callers, your good hands should reap huge pots. Brent | ||

| In a game where everyone is a calling station you might want to employ these stratagies. 1. Assuming you can usually limp in without a raise it's worth while to see more flops especially in late position. The reason being is that if you hit a flop the pay off will be greater with several players calling you down. If you miss then just fold. Beware with this stratagy you should not play second pairs - top pairs only and 33% cheap flop draws. Play tight agressive after the flop and see more flops! 2. If you can't drive anyone out with pre-flop raises then unless you have AA, KK or AKs don't raise pre-flop. The theory being that you can jam the pot if you hit the flop and minimize your exposure if you don't. Try these two things and if the game is as you described you will place in the $ more often than not. You will never go 4 weeks empty. on 29. | I am not surprised that 6 people would call your bet with QQQ on the table given your description. Many bad players will call with ANYTHING... a deuce 3 anything to boat up. | ||
