| I recently started playing online and I see they have various NL tables. (ie $200, $100, etc referring to buy in). What type of bankroll would you recommend before entering these tables? The $100 has 1/2 blinds I believe. Also, does anyone know if you can buy in for more on the $100 table? Finally, add some more nuggets of wisdom, I need all the help I can get : ) Thanks. -B | ||

I play similiar structure no limit tables to break up my limit hold'em play with the more volatile game that I enjoy more, I would even call it a passion to the degree of love. Generally the decision on bankroll for me isn't based on how much is needed to sustain that play, but how much am I willing to risk at once, since it isn't my main game played to build the bankroll. I think of it as tournament in bankroll economics, I refuse to risk more than 10-20% on any given game tournament or ring game, depending on the current size of my poker money. Increasing as it grows, decreasing if it is smaller. I've applied this for a couple of months starting with a tiny bank roll after previous stupid moves with the money and it seems to be keeping it safe, while encouraging growth. Before you make the jump to cash games, I would seriously advice playing a lot of tournament style no limit. Less on the line for the money, and much easier to manage wins. Move up the buy ins of the tournaments as your bankroll allows you too, and learn from your mistakes and good plays at the cheaper prices. Get to where you consistently stomp the $5 an $10 game, then when the money is there that it doesn't feel like a big risk, pick a ring game. Tournaments and ring game strategy run different but the same tactics are applied in either, the things you learn in tournament play will apply to the cash game. Personally I prefer the cash game now, as I'm more likely to yield more quicker. Table selection is key really being successful at online poker especially no limit where you can lose a lot fast. I love finding a game that is short handed .50-1 blinds with 4 or 5 people with around $30 or less on the table. These people are often weak players down to the near the bottom dollar and ready to give it up or double up, giving it up is the usual. I observe and try quickly recognize the weakest and strongest players, and buy in for about what the person with the most chips has in front of them. If that person is the weakest player maybe a little more to make sure that I have them covered. I generally avoid tables that has someone sitting with well more than I can buy in, as I'm not looking for pressure out of the gate, but to put pressure on people right away, build a healthy stack and be the person with a lot of chips as new people come into the game. If the game I find ideal isn't present, but there is something similiar, I go ahead and sit down with the amount that is in the middle between the guy with the most chips, and the weakest player at the table, so that my stack can be a threat, but my risk of loss is less should I wind up having to tangle with the guy with the loot. Either way I never play more than six handed, I prefer only having to keep track of 5 players tendencies at a time when playing no limit, as there is little room for error. Limit hold'em I don't mind a couple of good opponents at the table, no limit and I want to be the better player forcing mistakes, instead of making them. Hope this holds up as wisdom for you, good luck and have fun. | ||

| Also... I set an amount that I'm willing to lose, stick to it, if I say $50 and buy in for $25... I'm not going to feed more than I allowed myself to play should I blow it. No limit is too volatile to not have discipline and you can quickly bleed away a lot of that money you won. The game will be there later, after time for reflection on mistakes and maybe a trip back to the tournaments for a bit. | ||
