Should I go all-in?, mblmusic, 26. Dec 2003 17:30

I'm playing in an on-line multi-table tournament. The blinds are 100/200, and I have 1380 in middle position and am dealt K9 of hearts. Two players in early position call, I call, the small blind calls, and the big blind checks. The flop is 9d 4d 6s. The blinds check, and player #3 bets 380. Player #4 folds, and I go all-in figuring my top pair with K kicker is strong. The small blind folds, and the big blind and player #3 call. What would be the correct analysis if you were in my position? As it turns out the big blind stayed in an a gut-shot draw, and Player #3 had pocket 10s that won the pot.

Personally, I wouldnt even have played this hand. You didnt say what the other players have but you appear to be shortstacked. You want a hand that you can bet strongly. You cant bet k9s strongly because with 4 opponents, if you flop a king you may be outkicked and if you flop a 9 (which you did) there are so many overcards. You pretty much need to flop a flush draw to have a good hand. With blinds of $100/$200, Id wait for a better hand. Once you are in the hand, you have to go all in or fold to the bet. In my opinion player 3 misplayed the hand also. By your description, player 3 open limped. He has a pretty good raising hand with TT. He got a lucky flop.

I agree with iceman, You shouldnt have been playing this hand, I think you can wait for better cards. once the flop came 9 4 6, I would find this hand very hard to get away from especially shortstacked. If they werent all in on the flop, they certainly would have been by the turn or river.

Fist of all, you shouldn't be playing gash like K9s when you're at that small a stack. Or rather, if you are going to play it, then push all in with it in an uncalled hand and hope to steal the blinds or maybe survive a call by shear luck. It isn't a hand that you want to hit top pair with and therefore you really shouldn't be playing it at all this late in a tourney. Likewise, it isn't a hand you want to flop a flush draw with, since you're going to be put all in on the flop if you do get the draw and then you're most likely going to be committed to the pot if there are enough players in - if there are not enough players in then you shouldn't be there looking for a flush draw.

That said, you got yourself into a sticky spot with that, and I would be most likely to push all in if checked to me and to fold if bet to me. The reasoning is that if you bet it and somebody decides to make the tough call with a worse nine, a worse pair, or a draw, then you are preying on their desperation to get yourself an advantage where you have the best of it. When somebody else is betting it, it becomes a question of your desperation, vainly hoping that your hand is currently the best or will improve. Late in the tournament you want to be the one making the bets, not calling them.

So long story short, if you really couldn't wait for something better preflop then you should have pushed your K9s all in and once you get that flop, you're pretty much in a damned-if-you-do - damned-if-you-don't spot, so play it either by shoving in or ditching it.

That's my advice at least.

Hey what's up?
I think I would have folded. Cant call the 380 with 9,9...if I called I would be worried about 3 of a kind or 2 over cards...when the turn comes if player #3 bet IM folding, if he checks then id check to the bb and wait and see the river. Maybe for free.

But you were baked anyway b/c of the #3 player had 10,10...
