The correct play????
No limit holdem...down to four players...blinds 2000-4000, I,ve got 200 000 in chips and everyone folds to the blinds. I'm sitting in the big blind with 22.
The small blind raises to 8000 and has a stack of 80 000.
I was advised by my brother, who by the way is a very formidable player to simply just call the raise and hope to hit a two.
I wanted to pop it to about 30 000 and hopefully not get called.
I listed to brother and just called...the flop came 10 5 5. The small blind bet 16 000 and I decided to put him all in. Buddy called and the turn was a 7 the river was a 3, and he turned over 10 4 offsuit and took the money.
Looking back I think the play was to raise to about 30 000 pre-flop
and try to win the pot uncontested.
Any pros out there....?
Nick F

Sounds like he was trying to steal the blinds and then got lucky. Obviously the raise would have been the right move for you.

NICK, ON WHAT BASIS DID YOU CALL WITH 22. IT IS A LOUSY HAND. A PAAAIR ON BOARD DOES NOT HELP YOU. YOU DESERVED TO LOSE PLAYING LIKE THAT. LJH

There are good cases to be made for both calling and raising pre-flop, but one thing is for sure- once you missed that flop- and given that the pre-flop action gave you no idea what he had- you should not have continued.

being NL... and the fact that you were down to 4 players and you had 200,000... im figuring you had the chip lead?? this is not a time to go dancing around in pots... especially if you do in fact have the chip lead.. let them bust eachother... your odds at hitting a 2 outer on the flop for a set are not good.. which is the only way you can play this hand post flop really... anypair at all beats you... any moves made must be made pre-flop unless you do indeed get lucky and hit a duck on the flop! by all means... if your in the BB and its checked to you then check... or if you want to play it safe and its a small raise pre-flop the call and fold when you miss the flop.
