| I am not new to poker, but I am no where near the class you all sound like. I don't think the thought of playing a ring game and a tourny differently ever crossed my mind. Would someone please tell me some key differences? Strategies? Etc? I love this game and want to improve. TIA | ||

| Without getting to specific, in tourny play you have to survive, even coming in 9 th place your sometimes in the money. most people bluff more in tourny's imo, b/c they put up the buy in and fee already so some feel its better to go out in a hail of gun fire with a hand they cant lay down. ring games have real cash involved, so when people are faced with an all in bet most get scared,ie("i need to pay little mary beths tuition.") people think twice... dont get overly involved in that "strategy"aspect of it, adapt to the game as it comes. | ||

| In a nutshell, I would say that in a tournament: In the early stage - play more conservatively and do not push small edges in EV (i.e. fold if you aren't too sure of having the best hand), and In the later stage - play more aggressively than at a ring game (but still selectively). At the late, late stage (heads-up) is when I will always get trounced by a better player, so I have nothing to say about that. | ||

| In Tourneys you are balancing the need to build your stack and the fear of loosing it as once your out of chip you are all done (except re-buys of course). This dilemma presents some situation where correct cash game play may not be correct in a tourney. An example is not calling to see the turn when the pot is giving you just barely the right odds for the call (say in the case of a gutshot straight draw). In a cash game you would call but in a tourney you might fold since you don't have the tourney bankroll to survive the slim odds of hitting. | ||
