This Past Week - Shoot Me, mroban, 24. Dec 2003 17:03

This past week I have seen:

1. Busted out of tournament with AK against AQ. My opponent was on tilt and raised preflop, I re-raised him half my stack (I was getting sort of low stacked and this was my first playable hand in 40 minutes or so). He re-raises me allin and he had been on tilt so I called the rest of my chips. I normally would not do this but this guy was on a major tilt. He shows me AQ. Flop comes QQA. Nuff said.

2. In NL ring games, I have seen my KK beaten with the following hands (I made a pot sized raise preflop before all of them: a) Flop comes Q85. I make another pot sized raise and are called by 2 players. Figuring one on AQ and the other on a flush draw (there was a 2 flush on board) I make another huge raise on the turn (a blank). Called again. River is a blank. I bet again and am called by both. One player has AQ and then I notice another has Q5.

Next one I am called preflop by 2 players. Flop comes Q74. The 7 and 4 are suited. I make a large bet on the flop and one folds the other re-raises allin (only had $6 in front of him). I fear the set, but for only another $6 I call. He shows me 74 unsuited. Tells me afterward "I had to call you preflop I was in the BB". Oh my.

The last one involved a similar situation as above. But the caller had A9. The flop came 953 rainbow. Again, I make a large raise on the flop and am called. Guess which card hits the turn? Yep. I don't like the A when I see it but I bet it and am re-raised allin. Again, this guy only had $8 or so in front of him so I make the call. I do not make my set on the river.

This is all in the same session mind you (2 different tables) of $50 NLHE on UB.

Arrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Youre playing $50 NL so the blinds are .25/.50 correct? So when you say you made a pot size raise preflop, are you saying that you are raising .75? If you are opening the pot is only .75...Even if there are 2 limpers the pot is only $1.75 so are you raising another $1.75?

Iceman:
If you are the first one in, you are calling the blinds (.50) then making it another $1.25. So yes, it costs $1.75 to call the raise. If there are limpers the raise is bigger because I will always make a pot sized raise preflop.

Honestly, I don't think I should make a bigger raise here. With KK or QQ you dont necessarily want to just win the blinds. You want some action. Just not too much. That size raise always achieves that purpose.

well, I have to take a shot here. You're making early pot raises for tiny amounts and then paying off for much bigger amounts.

Maybe you need to rethink your NL playing strategy, especially at the limited buy-in tables?

Just a quick thought.....

mroban, I havent played NL at UB yet but on PokerStars, if I make a pot size raise preflop I will always get 2-4 or more callers. Obviously some of them have junk but that I dont want to play KK against that many people even if one or 2 has junk. If you are first to act, the pot is .75 (the size of the .25 and .50 blinds). Its hard for me to believe a raise of .75 will steal the blinds. I play $25NL at PS where the blinds are .10/ .25 and even with those tiny blinds a raise of .75 will get multiple callers every time. My average raise (depending on if Im opening or raising limpers) is about $1.25 and I still usually get 2-3 callers.
