Embarassing myself for a tourney..., MozMan, 24. Dec 2003 12:50

This is actually kind of a funny story, and my friends at work will probably never let me live it down.

My kids live with me, and their mom lives about an hour away. For Christmas, we normally have them go to her house to wake up Christmas morning; partly because it's more fun for them (she gets into the holiday more than I do) but also for her, as she doesn't get to spend as much time with the kids as I do.

So, last week, I told her I would bring the kids by around 5pm on Wednesday for the weekend. Then I get to thinking, "hmm... there's a 7pm NLHE tourney every Wednesday at CAZ. I could go there after dropping the kids off and play in it."

So, yesterday, my mother calls me at work. I was in the middle of writing some code, so I was pretty deep in my head and a little irritated that my phone rang. She says, "What are doing tomorrow night?" I say, "What day is that? Wednesday? Oh yeah, I'm gonna drop the kids at Gabby's and go play a tourney."

Mom says, "Well, come for dinner." I'm thinking, "What's the big deal, why dinner on a Wednesday?" I say, no, I'm gonna go play the tourney...

Mom's a little taken aback, and says, "Well, we could have dinner early... around 5?" Now, I'm annoyed. I say, "Fine, if it's that important, I'll eat and run."

After I hang up, one of my cell-mates at work says, "You really gonna blow off your family on Christmas Eve for a poker tournament?"

Christmas Eve! Damn... I thought we were just talking about a Wednesday! No wonder she was so bent on having everyone for dinner! Of course, I called and apologized to my mom, and told her not to rush dinner. I felt like such a fool, but we all got a pretty good laugh over it.

Man, I wish the barricuda (my ex-wife) was semi human enough to be able to work things like that out without a problem every time.

Yeah, it's funny; we actually get along better now than we ever did when we were married. It works out pretty good for the kids that way; they're not pawns like in some divorces.

Just wanted to say I love the Simpsons quote at the end of your sig - I'm a Simpsons nut.

Hey, I'll do you one better - I'm an actual PREACHER - 2 services tonight, whole family coming over tomorrow, and I was looking at online tourneys to see what I might do after the late late service. I'm usually up all night wrapping presents anyway!

Have a good time with the family.

LOL!

Well, I don't feel so bad any more! :)

Yeah, I love the Simpsons, too. I think it's pure genius.

Just another good reason to celebrate Festivus. "A festivus for the rest of us."
