| Monday, December 15, 2003 Monday nights have been crazy around the Belle. The tourneys are always sold out, with about ten alternates, who hardly ever get in. Usually at least six tables are running when we get to the cardroom. So we went early. It was still a madhouse. We started a "new" 4/8 hold'em game with a full kill. Mostly it was the usual suspects in the game. We all wanted to be playing by 5:45pm to get advanced seating for the tourney. I started out playing badly, and ended up playing badly. My cash game has really gone into the toilet, because I just don't care about it anymore, and am not studying, nor playing wisely. I was bright enough to cash out when I realized this. I need to read some more. The tourney started downhill for me. I was sat at a Stud table, all closed in. Okay, so I don't mind that, I stay warmer, lol, and Joyce definitely smelled fine (she was at my table, too, and chatting with me up a storm). Jack was to my right, and is a total rock. We call him "Stand up Jack," because he always stands up when he goes all-in. He is in his 70's, I guess, and says he is almost deaf. He has hearing aids in both ears. He is a very nice guy. Anyway, when Jack was in the SB and I was in the BB, we both hit trip eights. Naturally, he had me outkicked, lol. If there is any chance that both blind hands have the eight, and that kicker is going to play, it will happen to me. Hehe, kidding, I'm not accusing the Belle of dealing "Action Flops," for you Internet doom/gloomers out there. I just find it funny. Next I got AA. I don't care to get AA as much in the limit portion, because there are too many loose callers when there are unlimited rebuys. Believe it or not, at my hyper-aggressive table, it was capped before it even got to me! I called the cap, naturally. I was beat all the way, as the guy who made it 3-bets had QQ, and flopped a queen. When we went to no-limit, I caught AA again, and this time got called by Joyce, who had JJ and had about 75 more in chips than me. She got no help, but managed to turn those 75 into about 500, and hung on a lot longer than anyone expected. Joyce may have a drug and gangrene problem, but she can be a sharp tourney player, when she has to! A little later I got JJ myself, but only stole the blinds. I was never in any good chip position for the whole tourney, but I still had a great time. For whatever reason, the most loud, boisterous, funny and good humored people got sat at my table. There were three tourists, but the other six of us were locals who love to have a great time. Not a hand went by that someone was not making some crack or another. The dealers were going bonkers by our constant stream of chatter. Gene (I call him "little" Gene, because he is shorter than the other Gene), is the Belle's funny-man. He also has diabetes, and has the best outlook on life, always making jokes, but, on the other hand, never, ever shutting his mouth. He allows us to poke fun at him about it, because he knows he talks nonstop. I kept calling for duct-tape. Even Larry was getting into the spirit of things and making a crack here and there. The poor tourists thought they had entered a loony bin. I finally went out like a trooper. I was blinded down to my last 500. My BB was raised, and I went all-in without looking. I turned over K5s, caught a five, but the raiser had JJ. I had a great time in this tourney. The people at the Belle are truly special. ---------------------------------------------------------------- For whatever reason, Binion's didn't want the Belle to use their name to promote the free seat into the WSOP. I guess they loved the idea that the Belle was having a contest to give away a 10k seat, but they didn't want us to use "Binion's Horseshoe" or "World Series of Poker" unless we paid them, or some such dribble. Go figure! At any rate, our poker room manager called Bellagio, who were only too happy to let us use the name of their cardroom and their WPT event next spring. So instead of giving one person a 10k buy-in, they are giving four of us a $2500 supersat buy-in. Should be interesting. The way the system works is by points. The top 20 finishers in each tourney get points based on their finish. Those points are to be added up for the next four months, and the top four point finishers get the seats. Since I am not planning on being in the WPT, I can take advantage of the tighter play by the locals. They are usually very loose and will call all-in's liberally. Now they are tightening their belts a bit, trying to "hang on," to make it into 20th place or better. I can steal more blinds, be more aggressive. Gotta love that! I finished 15th in the tourney, but I still got 6th in points, since so many people playing were not on the contest list. If I am one of the top four finishers, I will give the seat to Glenn. The seat is transferable, but not cash redeemable. I might even play the supersat, if I am allowed to play it, then give the lamer to Glenn to play in the WPT event. I'll do whatever I can not to endure cameras, lights, makeup and god-forbid, frigging heart monitors! I was very proud of Glenn. He made it to the final table, and into the money. He had a decent chip count, about 2000 heading into the final. Not too shabby, but not the lead. I reminded him subtly that he wasn't going for the $13 increases, he was going for the 1k first prize. He already knew it, as it stuck in his mind from last week's debacle. He played aggressively, like me. There were a few times I cringed, like the 3x BB raise with ATo, then checking it down to the big blind all the way through the river. Yipes! But for the most part, he played more aggressively. Finally he went all-in in LP, with AKs. He got called by the chip lead, who was in the BB. Who would put the BB on pocket queens? He was out at eighth place and picked up over $100. I supported him that it was the right move many times over. He was still a little uncertain, but I backed that move 100%. Glenn actually got 4th in points, because out of the top eight, only 4 were registered for points. Yippee! Glenn is 4th, I am 6th. Things are very good in the world today! Felicia :) | ||
