| One line answer: Yes, a site could program it's software to deal winning hands to a particular player. You have not gotten many responses. As the author once said (Will Durant.) "The most interesting thing in the world is another human being who wonders, suffers and raises the questions that have bothered him to the last day of his life, knowing he will never get the answers." This site deals with those kinds of questions. Good luck with your question and your search. Ron | ||

| The real question you should be asking is why. | ||

| Exactly. On-line poker rooms have no vested interest in who wins or loses. All they care about is the rake. | ||

| If you are always coming in second place it is because you are playing second rate cards. This happens on-line and in B&M. If you are limping with ATo in early position, you can expect to be dominated and lose when an ace falls on the flop. Think about it this way... ATo and an Ace comes on the flop and you bet. Most of the time, one of 2 things will happen 1. everyone will fold and you win a tiny little pot if nobody has a better ace. or 2. a better ace will call you to the river and you lose a lot with a second best hand. If 1 and 2 both happen about the same about of time... you end up a big loser. There are lots of people that play on-line that make money over time. They lose some hands and get drawn out on some but they select the right starting hands and know when to get out. If the sites were truely rigged how would it be possible for these players to be consistant winners unless the site was rigged in their favor... but why rig a site in favor of the guy who consistantly wins??? It just doesn't make sense | ||

| Let me start by saying that I find it unlikely that online poker sites are rigged. However, it is not correct to assume that they have no vested interest in altering probability to benefit certain players. Any poker room makes the most money by having as many people as possible playing on their site. Clearly, it is in their interest for the people who would be huge losers to lose less than they normally would. Otherwise, they would probably run out of money and not be able to play at all. Similarly, large winners are not in their interest either. Reducing the win rate of good players will probably make them play more hours to compensate. These features are fairly easy to program into the software. Again, this is probably not happening. But whenever big sums of money are involved anything is possible. Just ask anyone who invested in Enron. | ||

| One of my many jobs is to write software for a living. So, yes, it would certainly be possible to (a) single out specific users for good or bad cards, or (b) skew the shuffle algorithm so that (un)favorable cards would fall more often (e.g. lots of big cards on the flop, followed by little turn & river cards X% of the time), or (c) write "bots" who knew what cards were coming and bet accordingly, or (d) pretty much anything else a really devious mind could think up to cheat people. It is also possible for a room full of monkeys at typewriters to produce the entire works of Shakespeare. Personally, I'm satisfied with sites that have their random number generators audited by math wonks. Note that you can't get truly random numbers unless you start with a real entropy source, and this is what the top sites (say they) do. If you really want to pursue this, see if they have placed any of their code in escrow for auditing by 3rd parties, and who those 3rd parties are. This is common practice for software companies with big clients who want to be sure they can at least sue the pants off the software vendor if something big goes wrong, or have the code to maintain themselves if the vendor goes under. They probably haven't, since an online poker site is pure retail wtih no "big" clients. On the other hand, several sites just put different user interfaces on "poker engines" written by a 3rd party company. The "engine" vendors probably have code in escrow for the sites who use them. | ||
