Are $5 SnG's Any Sort of Skill Indicator?, Daniel, 23. Dec 2003 12:11

Ive just started playing online somewhat recently. My bankroll is not the highest, so I play 5+1 SnG's online. At first, I would be in the money about 80 percent of the time. This was for the first 15 tournaments or so. Now, it seems like I've dropped off. I still make the money probably 50 percent of the time..but I feel like with the skill levels some of these opponents show, I should be doing better. My bankroll has started to decline, and I was wondering this: Is my loss a skill thing, a "bad run" thing, or is it simply the fact that the rake/fee of 1$ for a buy in of 5 and prize breakdown of 25/15/10 just too high to beat basically (i've played 40-50 tournaments..and without the rake I'd be up)?? Should I move to 10 +1 instead? My feeling is that the skill level of competitors will not change but percent take of the house will.

Sorry for the long-winded post.

What site do you play on? On PokerStars, all of the SNG's have a 10% fee (I think the $100's maybe a little lower). The $5's have a .50 fee, the $10's have a $1 fee etc... As to the skill level, I dont believe there is much skill difference in the $5, $10 or $20. I find that the $5's have mostly bad players. The $10's have mostly bad players but I will find one or two that are pretty good. The $20's may have 3 or so good players and the rest are very average. It takes quite a few SNG's before you will know which catagory you are in, but if you can place in the money in 50% of them then I would say you could easily move to the $10's and see what happens. Just dont call an all in with AQ or AJ. That is the number one mistake I see people make.

Thanks. Haha, AQ and AJ, I NEVER call all-in on those hands. This is PartyPoker by the way. The thing is, its not a 10% fee, its $1 for 5 and also $1 for 10. That may be the problem. Also, does it almost make sense to move up in $ amount just so the competition is actually avg and therefore at least more predictable?

Ive played over 200 $10 SNGs on PokerStars and I wouldnt say that the people play any better than the $5's. The only thing predictable is how they play predictably bad. There will be a couple decent players but many more people bad ones. I just recently started playing the $20's and I cant see much difference there either, other than I can steal blinds a little easier because people respect raises a bit more.

iceman I play on pokerstars all the time whats your handle, mines tcraiseit. I find the 2 table 10 +1 the easiest to beat. you can grab a lot of chips before crunch time. I agre that usually there are only 2 or 3 good players at these limits. The 5+ 50 are way to stupid.

I cant say that I remember seeing you. I am "utrecht". Ive only played the 2 tables twice. I won one and came in 2nd in one. They take longer than I like though and the payouts dont seem as good because top 4 get paid. I may need to take another look though. What time of day do you play?

iceman, I play most of the time late afternoons to early evening, about 5 days a week. I like the 2 tables because, I think it cuts down the luck factor a little. You get to play a short table twice. But thats just my opinion, it may not be a big factor. Would like to hear what other players think.

Well I'm glad to hear you're not 'iceman4' which is who I thought you were... I knocked him out of a sit and go the other day and he just wasn't too - shall I say - nice, afterwards...

Think I've played against both of you at some point in time. Say hi the next time your on - same id here as there.

You I remember. Only because your name is unique. I cant remember how I did against you though. I think I may have played with (against) you several times. Ive never seen iceman4 though.
