| Around this time of year, I sit down and go over the poker year and put together a list of things that I need to work on for the next year. Some stay on the list each year (based on importance and/or my personality getting in the way), but some are new. So, here is my list for 2004 and others can add on! 1. Maintain discipline at all times. You can't win much simply by doing this, but you can lose a TON if you don't. 2. Don't play at levels higher than your bankroll allows. This doesn't mean don't try a soft game 1 level above your comfort zone...rather, make sure you don't move your comfort zone upward until you have the 200-300 big best to do so. 3. Play your best at all times. Every street, every hand, every lap, every session, every week, every month. Remember that it is the cumulative effect of correct decisions that wins you the money over time. 4. Don't go on tilt. It is a waste of money and not a good use of the heart muscle. 5. Enjoy the game. If you are in a lousy mood, DON'T PLAY!!!!! 6. If you ever think that you are "in the zone" and "better than all the others" you play with, take some time off and work/study your game. Hubris can be the end of your bankroll. 7. Treat others with respect. Berating anyone is bad form, but especially bad players. Take Angel's advice from the post recently...making bad players enjoy their experience will keep them coming back. 8. Don't let the game consume you. This is more for newer players who are so enthralled with this wonderful game. Anything that consumes you (other than attention and care for loved one's) is a bad thing. 9. Keep exhaustive records. This is one that I always start off with the best intentions and then get lax toward the end of the year. The only way you can identify some leaks in your game is to know everything you can about your game. Without detailed records, this is impossible. 10. Fold or raise most of the time; call less. Checking and calling is not winning play...avoid it most of the time. 11. Take scheduled vacations from the game. Whether you think you need it or not, you will come back much more relaxed and focused than you would think. 12. Study, apply, ask questions, and repeat. NO ONE has cornered the market on knowledge of poker. I hope that this list finds all of you doing well. Happy holidays and New Year to all UPFer's! Steve | ||

| "8. Don't let the game consume you. " (followed immediately by...) "9. Keep exhaustive records. " :0 Good list though. You might want to detail more about the records that you're talking about, for new people, or point them towards another post in the archives if there is one... | ||
