At some point there must be a first time for everything...And most people with most first times are nervous...I remember the first time I played 5-10 I was shaking....As a person you need to address those fears and get through those types of situations in order to grow....

That said, you should PREPARE to step up...not when you are stuck......or bored. Prepare yourself mentally...Make sure your game is ready to step up.........Proper preparation prevents piss poor performance......

Life is Good :-)

Thanks for the advice Roy,

I'll be playing 4/8 HE for the first time next week and am nervous and excited at the same time. I've been playing good in our 2/4 home game and have been reading Lee Jones and Caro's tells book getting ready

yes definatley thanks to Roy! and piss poor performance it was! the guy (me)who sits at 15-30 and has an image of an agresive rock... who when raises everyone folds.. was playing piis poor for sure! instead of making "solid moves", i was trying to out play the feild! back to 4-8 for me! oh well... i have holes that need patching anyways... i dont like the fact that i have the tight/agressive image all the time... no action that way... i need to vary my play more... but i have found at limits like 4/8 people dont look at that stuff... they dont realize it's the first time in 3 hours i've raised... they play thier cards and nothing more... but in higher limits people tend to pay more attention to what i do... any thoughts on how i should change my image w/out losing money playing the crap once in awile??

Just don't put too much weight on your first few sessions.
Remember that if you win a lot it isn't because you're smart and if you lose a lot it isn't because you're stupid. Skill only comes into poker in the long term. Never get cocky, but make sure that you are self confident.

Most of all, realize that Socrates was right when he said that the only wisdom is in knowning that you know nothing. When the time comes that you don't look back at moves you made a year ago and say, "What was I thinking? I was so stupid" then you have stopped growing in skill. And poker players never maintain their skills - they either get better or they get broke ... or they get bored and start selling real estate instead ;)

Whatever you do, make poker your long term commitment and put aside enough money to whether a storm in your chosen limit first. Don't give up on the 4/8 until you've lost $2400 (but if you do lose that roll then you need to seriously reconsider your game) and don't play unless you are prepared to lose up to $2400 trying. And then don't move up to the 5/10 until that number hits $3000.

You don't need to have the money - just the willingness to part with it if things don't go your way. Hell, I'm 20-40ing now and I still have student debts to pay off, but I also have good credit and a cash roll stashed away. I'm ready and able to take the swings (though I certainly don't want to be put to the test there).

In my last session I dropped about $1200 in 6 hours and just shrugged my shoulders, said, "Pity - it was a really good table," and went out for a beer with my friend. That's 30 big bets, it's a big loss, but it is a drop in the bucket in the whole equation ... hell, I made more than that the session before, so the sting isn't there, the fear isn't there, and the hope isn't there. If I make a grand it goes into my roll and if I lose a grand it comes out of my roll - it isn't real money anymore - just business - and when you can do that with your bankroll you're good to go.

Walk before you run, run before you fly, and play 20-40 before you play 30-60.

I recently moved up to the 20-40 at Brantford and thankfully was rewarded for my bravery by being slugged square in the face by the deck. It is easy to slide into a new limit when you can't lose. I now know the usual suspects around the 20-40 and when the same people are around a 30-60 I know what to look for. Eventually the right folks will be playing 30-60 and I'll head over to a "table that is too good to pass up" .... maybe in a year I'll be doing that with the 50-100 too. But everything in baby steps. It took me a long time to hit the 20-40 and the 50-100 still has me terrified just to watch it. Hope and fear are the poker player's two biggest enemies and I'll never sit in a game where either one is affecting me.

Greed is healthy in poker, in measured quantities. Greed keeps me from making real friends in my cardroom - keeps me from ever softplaying. Greed causes me to do something every day because of the philthy lucre it provides and that motivates me to do it well.

Hey buddy dont feel bad, I did the exact same thing with 25-50 and did great the first day, but lost my a$$ the next... We all get a little ahead of ourselves sometimes. Just stick to the limit you usually play. I wont play any higher then 10-20 at the Horseshoe, Tunica. Later

"I Dont Tip" :o)
