Isnt a check/raise in this spot a horrible play in Omaha8?, Eman, 22. Dec 2003 12:15

Omaha8 2/4 table online.
I get dealt Ac 2c 5h 6d in the BB
4 callers and the SB calls. I call as well.
the flop: Kc 5s 8c, i have a nut flush and nut low draw. Two other players in the pot are very very aggresive and im pretty sure i can count on them to bet there hands. SB checks, I check, EP checks, MP bets, LP calls, Button raises, SB folds, I call the two bets (think about reraising with my nut draws, but i didnt have anything yet). EP, MP, LP all call
The turn is a 3c (Kc 5s 8c). I made my nut flush and nut low.!! Great.
I checked, EP checks, MP & LP Checks and Button bets, I call (didnt want to raise and drive out the three other players). EP now raises, MP folds, LP folds, and button calls, (well now i figure since the EP checkraised and drove out the two players, I should cap and get as much money in.) I cap it and they both call.
The river is a Kd (Kc 5s 8c 3c).
I bet out with my nut low, EP raises, and Button reraises and I call and EP caps it and we both call.
I end up splitting the nut low with EP and the Button had K8 for the Fullhouse for the high.

Isnt the check/raise a horrible play by the EP if he had the nut low?
Any comments the hand appreciated.

It may depend on what other cards the EP player was holding there. For instance, did he hold the nut low and two pair? A smaller flush, top pair? Perhaps he was trying to get rid of some players and take 3/4's with a semi-decent high to go with his nut-low hand. Or, perhaps he misread the players involved and he thought that he was the only one with the low side.

Also, alot of players don't pay any mind as to "how to string the others along" as a means to try and extract bets from the players that are probably going to fold alot of times if their own hands aren't strong enough. Example : If I have the nut low with basically no shot for the high side, I will just call a bet if one was made in hopes that some others will call as well. And I'm not going to worry about the fact that I might get bricked on the river. Those things happen sometimes but it is still worth it from a 'making money' aspect to actually want *more* callers in the pot on the turn, than less.

Remember, If there's more than 4 players in the pot that call all bets on the river and only two of you have the nut-low, you will still show a profit. (not a huge profit, but you won't lose money either).

Tough break on your nut-nut hand not holding up there but, you gotta love the fact that the button would take all that heat on the turn with just two pair when a low and a flush is present.

4P-

im a total Omaha virgin, and I actually profitted from that session. It seemed like players play way more hands than in holdem. One thing I noticed, and I may be wrong, is to toss away your flush or straight draw if the board pairs. someone almost always makes a fullboat.

Thanks for the tips again.

Eman given the players position his check raise on the turn was probably a poor play. If he had last crack at it and there were 4 callers it would have been more sound. However, the check raise on the turn does not compare to the HORRIBLE play this opponent makes on the river. He has no high hand and capped the betting three way. This is, in general, a very poor play in O8. Just my thoughts. GRANT PITTMAN
