Celebrity Poker on Bravo - Somebody Pull the Plug, Russ, 22. Dec 2003 10:12

Ok. I am certainly entertained by the WPT poker coverage on Travel and the WSOP on ESPN (even the 29th time around). The Celebrity Poker crap on Bravo is to poker television what "The Family" was to reality television. This is a disgrace to say the least. Some comments from the most painful hour of my life.

1. Do these people qualify as celebrities? Mo Gaffney is as much of a celebrity as I am. Do you think that her agent told her that this is the biggest thing to happen to her career since '91? When Hank Azaria is the closest thing you have to an A-list star, chances are that the use of the word Celebrity is questionable at best.

2. Was the budget for this show over $99? The furniture they setup in the 'losers' room (although these people were all losers pre-flop) is so '70s that I thought Bob Eubanks was going to come out and ask the big lipped girl from King of Queens if she enjoyed 'making whoopie'.

3. Why does everyone clap when someone raises 2000 in EP with a 56 os? This is the same as clapping when someone runs a 1:22 100 meter dash in the Special Olympics. Surely they are not clapping for Peter Faricelli's career?

4. I have seen better commentary in a homemade backyard wrestling video. Kevin Pollack has apparently become less and less funny as his career dwindles down. Phil Gordon has less personality than the dealer. Speaking of Phil Gordon, who was the Bravo exec who interviewed him and thought that he would be perfect? That guy should be fired. Phil Gordon is the anti-madden. He actually took the one exciting hand of the night and turned it boring. That's how talented he is.

5. Everytime I think about this terror of a show, it reminds me more and more of the XFL. Seemed like a good idea at first thought, but after the vodka wears off it's better to just forget it was ever discussed. If I was an agent to one of these 'celebrities' I would quit if any of my clients even entertained this crappily executed show.

I got my prediction pegged at 9 more shows before they replace the time slot with reruns of the Jude Law: Inside the Actor's Studio episode.

Agree? Disagree?

This show is so bad that, if invited, Michael Jackson wouldn't appear for fear of tarnishing his image.

Somebody at Bravo, hear my plea: put this dog out of its misery! Replace it with Queer Eye reruns, anything!

All the bad talk aside, it is the poker that I find most atrocious. I can't watch terrible poker from amatuers.

That post was great! I was laughing out loud at work....

I think the idea started out good, but then turned sour somewhere along the way. Here are what I think some of the problems are:

- Playing for charity. Not that playing for charity is a bad thing, but when you have nothing to lose, poker is not real anymore. Now if everybody that lost had to give the winners charity 10K and the winner pays nothing that might help.

- Almost all the players suck! It was painful to watch Afleck get sucked out on again and again by someone who had no clue. Are there not enough celebrities out there that know how to play? Mix in some pro athletes if you can't get enough from the TV world. They seem to think that because it is celebrities, we would want to watch whatever they do....would you watch celebrity baseball?

- The audience...who the hell wants to hear cheering in poker? (Except when Helmuth gets eliminated in any tourney...)

I think the show would have a chance of survival if they got players that know how to play, got rid of the audience, and made some sort of difference between winning and losing to the celebrities.

Am I the only one who appreciates this show?

take it for what it is...bad poker and mindless entertainment. At least Phil tries to bring some exert analysis into it, which is fairly difficult. I know if I was doing color I would find it impossible not to breakdown in histerical laughter.

Hey...it's better than watching the bachlorette wedding with my wife.

It might of actually been kind of fun to do the show . It was filmed over a few days at the palms.

Has anyone noticed that most of the celebs have played poker on their shows ?

I was kind of thinking of doing the same kind of thing at my house with everyone giving the prize money to my favorite charity.

anyone want to take a shot?

as far as the tv poker movie game show goes well, .IMO.. it sucks

You know, you might be right. They should have gotten that guy from the thanksgiving sands tourney. He practically had an orgasm everytime someone had two pair or trips.
