Meeting MozMan and a Tourney at Riverside, FeliciaLee, 22. Dec 2003 08:25

| Friday, December 12, 2003 On Friday I made a variety of mistakes which I am not very proud of, yet felt I had no choice in making, which is just that much worse. Glenn and I called the Belle only to find out that Joyce was playing. We decided to forego the Friday night Omaha tourney. The Riverside, my "favorite" cardroom (LOL), spreads NLHE on Friday nights and has supposedly started adding $500 to their prize pool, as well. Reluctantly, we decided to go to the Riverside instead. On the way to the Riverside, I'd forgotten that a UPF poster had written me to say he was coming to Laughlin. Doh! I'd encouraged him to stay and play at the Belle. His nickname is Moz, and he is from Phoenix. I asked Glenn to swing by the Belle first, and that I would go in and tell Moz the situation. The floorman pointed him out, and I called him to the desk. Ooh! He was seated next to Joyce, poor thing! What a first impression he must have gotten from the Belle. Eeek! I told him the situation, and also that if he'd rather play in a NLHE tourney versus an Omaha tourney he could come with us. He was doing well at the 4/8, full kill, so said he'd come to the Riverside later. Both the floorman, and Ward, who was preparing for the tourney, seemed disappointed that I would not play there for the night. I felt kind of guilty, but just looking at Joyce made the bile rise in my throat, although I could not "smell" her from the desk and Moz said she seemed okay. We were greeted at the NEW "under contruction" poker room at the Riverside. I have to give my kudos to Tim, the floorman. Even though they aren't taking call-in's anymore, he PAID for our seats in advance, since we told him we were coming in. After everything negative I've said about the Riverside, now I have to say something positive as well. I sat at an empty table, and Pat came up to me almost immediately. She sat down and said she wanted to apologize to me. I had no idea what she was talking about. She said she'd acted grumpy when I gave her the compliment on her "good playing" on Monday when we cashed in the hold'em tourney. I laughed and told her I'd never thought anything of it. I'm a WITCH most of the time anyway, so I rarely get offended by anything. We got four tables for our tourney, with a few alternates. A player to my left played so badly that he was out of the tourney in about 20 minutes, even with purchasing a rebuy. The way the tourneys at the Riverside work, one is given a pink chip that is for rebuys only. If you bust out, you can make a rebuy at that level. If you bust out again, you are OUT. Once that level ends, the pink chips are returned and it starts all over again for the next twenty minutes. After the third level, there is a $20 "rebuy" for 2000 more in chips and a $20 add-on for 2500 more. And that is all she wrote. It seems confusing, but I've played about three of their tourneys since August, and I think I have it down pat, LOL. Anyway, the player to my left was gone, to be taken by an alternate. The poker room manager!!! Wow. Okay, I'm not even going to give any opinion on this. I got two runner-runner beats in the first level. I had to rebuy. One of them was when I had AK. A LP player raised with Q8s for the steal, then CALLED my all-in from the blind (???). The flop came AKx. Wooohoooo! Then he got runner-runner diamonds for the flush. Lovely. Another (non runner-runner) beat was when I had AQo and raised in LP. A loose-aggressive player stayed in with 66. I caught an ace and went all-in. He stayed in, to catch his two-outer. Finally, I was able to catch 66, and hit my set (on the flop though, I didn't wait around to river someone, lol). I went all-in and doubled up. I thought I'd be out of the tourney, having used my pink chip, but I survived, even though I got two callers!!! Not much happened in the second or third levels. Then the rebuys ended, and serious poker began. Not long after that first hour, we were broken up. We were already down to two tables! I'd forgotten just how loose the tourney players are at the Riverside. I had a smallish stack, not getting much going on outside of the first level, ugh! I made a few steals, but I never doubled up again after the 66 hand. I was treading water, but I wasn't very safe. Finally I made a move in LP with AKo. I was called by something like KJo, but that was not the call that surprised me. What did surprise me was a horrid player who called with Q5o. To attempt a steal with that hand, yeah, I can see that. But to CALL an all-in? Hmm, that is why I love these people, I guess. I got my king on the turn, but the flop contained two hearts, then came runner-runner hearts, and the Q5o guy had the five of hearts. IGHN. While I was sitting and watching Glenn, who made it farther than I did, I noticed that the prize pool didn't seem right. Okay, the Riverside has a $20 buy-in. They say $15 goes to the prize pool, $5 goes to the house. $500 is added from the BB jackpot drop. There were over 40 entrants, once the alternates were seated. Let's just say 40 to make the math simple. 40x15=600. There is one optional rebuy (or it can be used as an add-on) during the first level. I believe everyone at my table took it. Using that as the average, let's say 40x10=400. During the second level, I noticed that most players did NOT take the optional rebuy/add-on. It was once again $10, and for only 1000 chips (not as good of a deal as what was to come). So unless they busted out and HAD to take the rebuy to stay in the game, most of them declined the "add-on" with their pink chip at the end of that level. I believe only two people were forced to take it, as they had gone broke sometime during the level. So if there were two players who took it at our table, let's say eight took is altogether. 8x10=80. During the third level, almost everyone took the optional rebuy and add-on. The rebuy was $20 for 2000 chips. The add-on was $20 for 2500 chips. I believe only one player declined the add-on. Everyone else did both. Using that as an example, we would have 40 rebuys. 40x20=800. We had 9 add-on's. That would mean 36 players did the add-on. 36x20=720. All of this money goes to the prize pool. So let's add it all up: 600+400+80+800+720+500 (the $500 added to the prize pool from the BB jackpot drop). The total prize pool would be "estimated" at $3100. The top four players were paid. The pay is very top heavy, with the winner receiving 50%, I believe. Given this payout, the prizes would be: 1st: 1550, 2nd: 775, 3rd: 465, 4th: 310. I am estimating the percentages of the prize pool, naturally, as I did not see any broken down chart available to view. Instead, first place only paid out a little over $900 !!! It doesn't add up. No matter how I look at it, it doesn't add up. Even if I take off the $500 added from the BB jackpot drop, and assume that they have discontinued that promotion, it doesn't add up. Even if my table wasn't "typical" in the average rebuys and add-on's (Glenn says his was consistant with mine), it doesn't add-up. But why am I surprised? Has anything ever ADDED UP at the Riverside? Have I even read my old posts regarding the Riverside? Am I a complete idiot? YES, obviously! Rant off ---------------------------------------------------- Glenn didn't make the money, although he did make the final table. He was blinded into several all-in situations. I wanted to pop him in the head. Did he learn from Thursday's $13 disaster? No. None of us made the money: Pat, Glenn, Moz nor me. Blah! Oh, well, onto the cash game. I felt like I "had" to play the cash games while Moz was in town. I felt obligated, which is my own hang-up, since I don't even like cash games. Stupid. Pat organized a 4/8 with a full-kill. The horrible player from my left, who busted out of the tourney in 20 minutes sat down. Bonus! I had two memorable hands. Pocket kings. Cracked by Pat's pocket tens. Pocket aces, four-bet before the flop, cracked by 87o, the "horrible player," who called four bets before the flop, and kept calling with a pair of sevens until he tripped up on the river. Lovely. I left the Riverside having lost $188, mostly in those two hands. Pat did well, but Moz, Glenn and I all left losers. Will I ever learn? I know where my strengths lie, yet I keep ignoring that fact. I'm a stupe... Felicia :) | ||

| I was on vacation last week, and appreciated reading through your posts since I obviously don't want to do any work after being in the Bahamas for a week, and then coming back to only a 2 day work week :P Anyways, my biggest thing I wanted to say is please ignore the abusive poster who contributes nothing positive to this forum that seemed to be gunning for you this past week. I'ld hate to have one rude person drive away those who add something worthwhile here. | ||

By the way, I really did enjoy my trip. The change of atmosphere helped me to look at my game a little differently, and I think there will be improvements. I wish I could say already, but (believe it or not) I haven't been able to play since I left Laughlin! :^) Anyway, I should be back at the tables Wednesday night, then again Thursday night or Friday morning for the rest of the weekend. Hopefully, it will be as profitable as Thanksgiving weekend was for me. -Moz "Humility isn't actually humility unless you're good enough at something to be humble."

| you know you can request/demand a full accounting of the # of entries, buy-in's, add-on's in a tournament, and check to see that the prize pool adds up properly. if you feel that the Riverside cheated the players, SPEAKUP!. kennycatkiller | ||

| Thanks, Kenny. This is nice, in theory, but if you have read my other posts on the Riverside, you know that this could also be very, very dangerous for me, as an individual. I'm not going to put my life in jeopardy over missing money. I just won't play there again. Felicia :) <<on 22.
