Omaha beginner, needs analysis!, Eman, 22. Dec 2003 08:13 | ||

| Ive recently started playing Omaha and need advice on this hand. I just sat down three hands ago at a 2/4 Omaha 8 game, so I have no comfortable read on the table or player texture yet. But heres what happened. I get dealt 10s10c2s4c on the button Two players limp in and I call as well (should i have raised) I dont like raising with medium pairs and not having a Ace for a low. I figure if an Ace comes on the flop ill be aggressive. Both blinds call. Flop comes Ks 7h 6s. EP player bets out, another calls, I raise to drive out teh blinds and hopefully drive out lone Ace players. Both blinds fold. other two call. Its three now. Turn is the 7d - board = Ks 7h 6s 7d Gives me a flush and a bad low draw. EP bets out again, next player raises. I call . EP calls as well The river is a 3s - board = Ks 7h 6s 7d 3s EP bets next player folds, I call EP has Ad Kc 3d Qd I win both high and low. Did I play this correctly? The other guy writes in the chat, that I had no business playing that hand to the river. Should i have folded this hand earlier? Any critism will be appreciated. | ||

| Hi Eman - A few suggestions here. You need to be entering the pot with much stronger starting hands - *especially* if you are new to Omaha. Ones that have really good potential in connecting with the flop. (2-4-10-10 is not a hand I would play at this time). Okay, but you did play it so let's look at the flop. The flop is K-7-6 with two spades. At this point, you are drawing to the 4th best low (not good), and you only have a pair of tens for high, (also not good), and a ten high flush draw (again, not strong enough to continue). When there is a bet to you, you should fold and not get trapped in a sticky situation. On the turn, when there was a bet and a raise, you MUST fold here. One, you could be drawing dead to the nut flush (which is a very strong possibility), and you could even be looking at a full house here. Your low draw is weak too, so why committ your chips with a very weak holding. All too often you will see players turning over the nuts. You need to be looking to do the same. If, however, you are going to be entering a pot with hands that are less than premium to good starting hands, then you MUST know when to fold them on the flop. You won the pot and I hate to say this Eman, but I wish you hadn't. Here's why. If it's going to instill any bad habits or misconceptions about this game, then you will have a long road ahead of you. Again, I'm sorry for sounding harsh. 4P- | ||

| ...Yes. Hey Eman, here's a link that I think will be helpful to you. www.playwinningpoker.com When you go to that website, click on to Steve Badger's Omaha Strategy section. Ray Zee's book is another good choice as well, and I recommend it. ...I just want to see you do well, that's all :) Happy holidays, Dave | ||

| thanks dave... I ll check it out. Im just trying it out for now, dont know if ill stick to Omaha long term, ive only been playing Holdem and think its nice to break it up for a bit. Ive been trying different games and Omaha8 is really intriguing. Regular Omaha high seemed more of a crapshoot. I even tried Triple draw and liked that as well. | ||

| Eman, Actually, from my (limited) experience' Limit Omaha High is a fairly easy transition from Hold'em. You don't have to worry about figuring outs for high and low, getting quartered, etc., etc. It is an excellent game, but hard to find much game selection. Pot limit Omaha High is a little more extreme, because of the high variation. Thats my take, for what its worth :) Will | ||
