No limit hold'em variant, Andrew Wells, 21. Dec 2003 00:00 | ||

| The game is NL hold'em with a variation. No one knows the stack size of any other player. I have an open ended straightflush draw on the flop. Notwithstanding the number of opponents, how would you play my hand, and why? | ||

| I would go all in on the hand. because i would have at a glance 2 chances to make 15 outs with 47 unseen cards. I like my chances | ||

| I would certainly agree with you that my chances are favorable enough to commit to this hand. If it is necessary to go all-in, the only reason to hesitate would be for deception purposes. Does this mean however that pushing all-in at first opportunity is optimal? I'm looking at making a play (whether I'm betting or responding to action in front of me) between pot size and half my stack. Since I don't know what anyone else's stack size is, I can't see what the ratio of my play is to what they can potentially risk. The question is meant to be allegorical using hold'em to describe a situation. I can't rebuy to play another hand. Either everyone folds or I complete the draw and it remains the best hand. I have a favorable situation regardless of the number of other players, so I would think therefore that consideration towards maximizing the size of the pot would have precedence over an attempt to win it immediately. | ||

| You are roughly 2:1 to hit either the str8 or flush by the river (I will assume both are nut draws). I would check with the idea of going all-in if someone bets as regardless of how much you have in front of you, if someone calls, you are getting the odds to make the play and if they don't then fine, you win what is in the pot. | ||

| Checking or making a small bet (pot size divided by number of active players) should there be no action in front of me, is an interesting idea for handling this situation. I'm going to explore that option. The possible problem with checking has two facets. It could get checked around with the turn bringing a blank. In this case I no longer have a favorable position and may have to fold to a pot overbet. I am now no longer committed to this hand. It could also get checked around where I complete the draw on the turn. Now having checked and suddenly showing strength could be too obvious. I may very well do no better here than if I had simply picked up the pot on the flop. I probably only get play from someone else who had elected to slow play a powerful hand (like a set) on the flop. The closer I am to the blinds, the less likely this will occur. So I like your idea the earlier my position is. In this allegorical situation I only have four pieces of information. I know what my cards are. I can see the flop. I know my stack size. I know the pot size. It is as though I took over this seat from someone else just as the flop came down (now playing my own stack), without even seeing who or how may other players are active in the hand or where the button is. I thought this was too much to explain at the top of the thread, could make the question appear peculiar, and not be taken seriously. | ||
