Random spread limit thoughts, Angel, 20. Dec 2003 19:02 | ||

| Generally, the larger the ante or blind the looser one should play and vice versa. That is pretty much a poker truism and like all generalities there are exceptions but all other things being equal this is a good rule of thumb. I was having random poker thoughts on the train ride home from Los Angeles the other day and concluded that the opposite idea (the smaller the ante or blinds are the tighter one should play) is less true in spread limit games against weak/passive opponents due to increased implied odds. Not a thought that figures to have a great deal of influence on my future results seeing as I haven't played a spread limit game for years but I figured if I threw it out here we might collectively earn the cost of a cup of coffee with the idea. *s* | ||

| Angel, I think you're 100% right about this, but the key is (as you said) "against loose/passive opponents." There's quite a bit of spread-low-limit HE in Vegas. In many games I played (esp. at the Luxor), pre-flop raises were rare. In that game, I played all kinds of hands I'd never play in a "normal" game (very low suited connectors, connected unsuited, low pairs out of position, etc.) It was quite common in these games to have pots ending at $50-75, but you could see the flop for only $2. Clearly a good bet in this situation. Of course, if the game is aggressive, this theory goes out the window. You shouldn't limp from EP for $2 in a 1-4-8 spread game with 34s if a raise is likely behind you. | ||

| Angel, I played almost exclusively spread LLHE when I was in Vegas and I totally agree with this exception. The blind was $2, but the max amount you could put into a pot was $92 on any hand. That's more than in a 3-6 game with a $3 blind, and roughly the same as a 4-8 game with a $4 blind. It took me a little bit to shift gears and play a little looser, but when I did I certainly gained from it. The flip side was that you need to play better after the flop, because a lot of times you are in there with a less than premium hand. (This is where J9 was killing me.) I felt right on the edge of my abilities against some of the players (the ones wearing Excalibur poker room hats, for example). Of course, that was the most fun part. Good post. | ||

| Hi angel This is true in all games no-limit, spread limit and limit....If the Antes are small you can tighten up and not get anted to death...But the true equation is what value can you get out of your hand...........If you can get value form a weak hand in a low ante game it is correct to play it.....Some books miss that point! Life is Good :-) Roy Cooke on 20. Dec 2003 19:02 Angel wrote: > Generally, the larger the ante or blind the looser one should play and vice > versa. Mini Blinds- same strategy?, guinnessman, 22. Dec 2003 08:14 | ||

| What about mini blinds like the 4-8 mini on UB? It seems somewhat the same where you should play more hands for the $2 blinds. When should you raise pre flop? JJ or better? Never? Is it worth $6 to win $3 with AA and nobody in the pot yet? I'm been trying to figure out if the best way to play this one is to never raise pre flop, but re-raise with premium hands if somone else has already raised. This added to playing more hands for cheap seems the way to go. Thoughts? Guinnessman | ||
