"Real Poker II: The Play of Hands (9) by Roy Cooke. This text is especially helpful to those of you who are interested in the thought processes of an expert player when he is at the table. Cooke is at his best when he is stepping through a hand."

I know what book I'm buying next!!! Great job, Roy!

I've read RP II and like it a great deal also.

It was especially striking to me to learn how many factors/variables Roy thinks through when playing a hand. It's hard to describe (everyone should read the book...then you'll see what I mean), but it's somewhat like reading about chess strategy. Roy seems to focus not on the present situation, but on how the hand could play out several steps ahead. Then, he tries to make moves in the present to steer the hand along the path he believes will be most advantageous in the future.

More than any other book I've read, RP II illustrates why EXPERT poker is never formulaic (i.e. expert poker is more than a never-ending series of , "when you're dealt x hand and there are y limpers you should z").

Readers should be aware that RP II really isn't an instructional text, in the way that most poker books are--but it's a fascinating window into the mind of an expert. Among other things, it taught me how much I still have to learn. And seriously, that's an important lesson...overconfidence can kill!

Well said MK

I too have the book and think its the nuts. Reading the book was the easiest and quickest way for me to find out how ignorant i really am at poker.

its unlike any other poker book out there, but if I had to compare it to something, I would say that it is like Middle Limit Hold'em (Briar and Ciaffone), but goes a few steps further. It doesn't just tell you what the correct play is, it tells you why the play is correct. Roy lists all the factors you should be thinking about, explains which are more relevant to the specific situation, then bases his decisions on how to make the most money.

This simplistic review may sound like many other books out there, but RPII is completely original. If you want to improve your game you need RPII.

I've been reading Roy Cooke's column for years, and I bought his first book years ago. What I like about it is the anectdotal stuff, what really goes on in the 30-60 games. I lost the book sometime ago but still remember stories of Safeway Rich and Full Value Al, bowling alleys and high limit games, and in general how to be happy in poker and life. Definitely on my top ten list.
