Because I play mostly online and have only logged a few session in a B&M I'm not real familiar with the purpose or idea behind a live straddle is.
When I saw it used it was at a $2-$5 spread limit game with only one blind (a $2 BB, no SB). This guy had a ton of red chips ($5) and was routinely posting a $5 live straddle when he was UTG. Most of the table seemed to be put off by this, as almost no one wanted to pay $5 to see the flop. I felt like I was fortunate to be seated 2 to the right of this guy because everytime he did this I was on the button. After he did it a couple of times I decided to make it $10 to go if it was folded or their was one or two callers. Because I had position it worked out great as I would usually win the $7 in blinds or take it down with $5 bet on the flop.
What I'm wondering is why do players do this, and is there any strategic advantage or is it for guys that crave action?

Thanks.

Its typiccally done to drive action but has a very negative EV. You're play on it was right. Raise it up with anything playable espescially given you had position every time it happened.

It is normally done by players with more money than the game he is playing in. Therefore making the blinds up to his level by raising blind

a live straddle is the dumbest move in hold-em poker! the straddler is putting in extra money in absolutely the worst possible position. it is usually done by those maniacs craving action, and i will guarantee that it has a negative EV. you were sitting in a lucky seat--how would you like to be one of the blinds?
my experience with raising the straddler with anything reasonable is that he/she will usually re-raise with anything. and you can't put him/her on a hand--it could be anything. nevertheless, raising is still the right way to go.
