really dumb question about TV poker commentary, Andrew W, 18. Dec 2003 13:58

OK, I know I will look like a moron for asking this, but I have to.

On the WPT, are the commentators really making their comments in live time, or do they do it post-game in production?

Why would I think the latter? As I've seen some shots of the WPT layouts, Mike and Vince are not far away from the table, nor are they in a soundproof booth. It occurs to me that if they're commenting out loud on the hands, the players would hear them. Of course, they are there, and you can see that they're talking from other shots where they're not the center of the action for that camera.

So A - am I completely nuts? Are they recording the play by play after the fact?

B - If so, what are they doing during the tourney?

C - If not, how are they not heard? They're not always whispering. Am I missing the sound proof booth?

And D - wouldn't live play-by-play be a problem anyway? If I were playing with a hole card camera, I wouldn't mind so much if there were no possibility of seeing them until after the fact, closed circuit or not. I'd rather know the tape was rolling, but no one was watching it until after, except maybe some techie locked away.

I've watched it a lot and I think that they do it after editing because they sometimes make comments before the action takes place. Also because of what you said.

There was an article in CardPlayer by Sexton on this, I forget which issue, and they do a mix of live commentary and post-game studio. The play by play is post-game, but the color comments are live.

They are showing a WPT marathon today. I was watching one this morning. The camera happened to pan past where Mike and Vince were sitting. You could hear Vince's voice but he was drinking from a coffee cup.

Andrew,
The majority of commentary is added in during post production.
They do make some color comments during the live recording of the final table.

I sat in the production room during one of the tapings (this year's Aruba tourney, not aired yet), and got some good insight into what goes on (I was completely in the dark going in as to what is involved in a TV shoot, so I learned quite a bit about the process).

Mike and Vince did nonstop commentary throughout the shoot, which later is edited. Also, no one sees the hole cards (except for one guy locked away, who insures that they are in fact being filmed). So, Mike and Vince add a lot of commentary later on after seeing the cards. I was impressed, however, with Mike's prognostication abilities during the live taping. He not only predicted the winner of the event before it began (which wasn't rocket science in this event, however), but he consistently predicted who would do what. His lifetime of experience in the game is a great benefit to viewers, in my opinion, as he has some good insights to share.

Mark
