was it worth the gamble to get a stack?, patrick ward, 18. Dec 2003 06:17 | ||

| At this years 340 buy in no limit event at the world poker finals there were about 750 players. with about 600 players left, and the blinds 100/200 I had about 2400 in chips. An action player who had yet to show a strong hand went all in for his last 840 in 4th position. everyone folded to me in 7th position. With pocket 7's I was confident that I had him beat and called. After alot of thought, the 9th player (who had 3500 in chips) bets all in. after pondering the dilema for a few I called. The short stack showed A8, The large stack showed AK offsuit to my 7's the flop was harmless and the turn was a king to end the tourny for me. I am normally inclined to wait it out in these situations, but I was ok with the short stack bet, and with the chips I had committed felt that an all in call was worth the gamble pre flop with what I felt was the best hand due to the large field, and the increaing blinds. how would you have played this hand. (please be more descriptive than FOLD) | ||

| You should have raised all-in instead of just calling the short stack. That way it might have had the AK fold. Doubtful, but if you were already going to call a reraise you might as well be the aggresser. I have a hang up about calling all your chips for some reason. I think that if you are going to call all your chips then you might as well raise with them first. You might get others to fold to your aggressive move. | ||

| agreed. With a mid or low pocket pair, you want to get heads up with this guy. Being short stacked, he would prob be going in with Axs, suited connectors, or any two-paint. Doubtful that he had a high pocket pair but you can't rule that out. Giving you a shot to bust this guy out, I would reraise all-in to be sure to get this guy heads up when you have a made pair. | ||

| If you are going to play it, I think you should have pushed all-in thereby assuring (or increasing the likelihood) that you will get him heads up. If you don't do that, you allow another player behind you to get a pretty good price on his call (2.75 to 1 in this case). You want your coinflip hand to be one-on-one, so the choice is all-in or fold IMO. | ||

| I'll dissent. I would have folded. With 77 you're only a very slight favorite over any two overcards, which is exactly what short stack had. Then there's the risk of someone reraising after you with a better hand (which is exactly what happened). Why risk that many chips at this point in the tourney? If the guy was playing that fast, you should have opportunities to get his chips when your advantage is bigger, right? | ||

| i agree, I would have folded in that situation. Wait for a better spot. Calling is just suicide. After AK guy goes allin, what could you possibly figure him for. Against two player, do you think that 77 will hold up without improving? If im pushing allin or calling allin preflop, you have to be somewhat sure that youre hand could win without improving. | ||
