Following chat transcript is provided for your reading from the Ask A Pro session at Planet Poker last night featuring Roy Cooke and Grant Pittman.

PP_TECH Hi all
Grant_P hi
RoyCooke Hi
PP_TECH We will wait a few minutes for the other players
PP_TECH to arrive and I will ask that black_jack ask the
PP_TECH first question
PP_TECH When your question has been answered, we would
PP_TECH ask you leave your seat so another player can be
PP_TECH summoned.
black_jack ok
black_jack guys what percentage of luck do you believe is
black_jack used in online poker
black_jack as opposed to live
PP_TECH Roy, please go ahead
RoyCooke the edge factor in online poker is lower than
RoyCooke live because you cannot get as good of a feel as
RoyCooke there are MUCH fewer tells in online poker...That
RoyCooke said, the game is much faster online and so your
RoyCooke ability to make money by the hour is higher than
RoyCooke live......But swings are higher END
black_jack ok thank you
PP_TECH Grant, over to you
Grant_P I don't think the percentage factor of luck
Grant_P changes from game to game since we are still
Grant_P playing the same game however as Roy said the
Grant_P number of hands dealt is so much greater it can
Grant_P appear that you need to be lucky since your
Grant_P bankroll requirements will be so much
Grant_P larger....END
PP_TECH Thanks Grant, Hope that answers your question
black_jack thanks guys that helps :-)
black_jack bye bye
Grant_P THANX....BYE
PP_TECH pierre go ahead with your question
pierre I'm curious to know the % of tourneys pros win $
pierre in and what you think the best tools are to
pierre improve tourney performance in order to play in
pierre bigger ones
PP_TECH Grant, please go ahead
Grant_P I think that tournament pros take much bigger
Grant_P swings in bankroll than live action players
Grant_P simply because the buyins for tournaments are
Grant_P getting bigger and the fields larger creating a
Grant_P situation where luck in the short term is a big
Grant_P factor....that being said....Roy and I had a
Grant_P chance to watch one of the best tournament and
Grant_P live players alive today play at several final
Grant_P tables at the Bellagio this week, Eric Seidel,
Grant_P and I believe his success has to do with
Grant_P intelligence hard work and extreme focus and
Grant_P dedication to the game....END
PP_TECH Roy, do you have anything to add?
RoyCooke Erik Seidel is currently in 4th place at the $10k
RoyCooke buy-in at the Bellagio!
RoyCooke END
PP_TECH thanks pierre
PP_TECH crapdoctor please ask your question
pierre doh...didn't get an answer to the real ? but thx
pierre anyway
crapdoctor what adjustments should I make, if any, if I'm
crapdoctor playing in a limit Hold'em tourney which has
crapdoctor 9-handed tables rather than 10?
PP_TECH Roy, please go ahead
RoyCooke With 9 handed tables you can play a little
RoyCooke faster as there is slightly less chance of running
RoyCooke into a hand...You also need to adjust to the fact
RoyCooke the blinds come around faster...But there is
RoyCooke little difference END
PP_TECH Grant, do you have anything to add?
Grant_P not much....the difference will be so small I
Grant_P wouldn't make any drastic strategic changes as far
Grant_P as hand selection....END
PP_TECH T hanks crapdoctor
crapdoctor tyvm
PP_TECH Hi Nine55Dave, please go ahead with your question
Nine55Dave hi guys
Nine55Dave I am in a funk right now where I have lost a
Nine55Dave significant part of my bankroll over a few days
Nine55Dave My confidence has taken a hit as well.
Nine55Dave I am wondering if you have any advice or
Nine55Dave anecdotes on how to get out of this bad time. I
Nine55Dave am a beginning player but smart enough to be a
Nine55Dave pro like you some day ; )
PP_TECH Roy, your thoughts?
RoyCooke Take a few days off and do things that will make
RoyCooke you feel positive mentally....Go back and review
RoyCooke notes or books and make sure your fundamentals
RoyCooke are in order END
PP_TECH Grant, would you care to add anything?
Grant_P I think that when you are running poorly it is
Grant_P important to play within your comfort zone
Grant_P financially and perhaps tighten up a little with
Grant_P hand selection until you can regain your
Grant_P confidence....going broke in this situation will
Grant_P make it much tougher to restart....END
PP_TECH Hope that helps Nine55Dave
Nine55Dave it does, thanks
PP_TECH tonyo, please go ahead with your question
tonyo first Roy.. my mom says you are sexier then bbq
tonyo 2nd
tonyo why am I having nightmares about this one bad beat
tonyo on the weekend
tonyo I walk out 1200 up
tonyo and nailed a str8 flush
tonyo but this bad beat is killing me
tonyo that's it
PP_TECH Roy, go ahead please
RoyCooke Tell your Mom thanks :-)
tonyo ok
RoyCooke Bad beats are just part of poker...Put them
RoyCooke behind you mentally and just play the next hand as
RoyCooke best as you can! END
tonyo ok
tonyo ty
PP_TECH Junior101 go ahead with your question please
junior101 I have a question. Everyone we have played in our
junior101 town we have dominated. However this one guy we
junior101 play sometimes gets drunk and becomes the
junior101 ultimate calling station. He will call pre-flop
junior101 raises with hands like j2 off 9 3 off etc. and he
junior101 is lucky and catches
junior101 is there any advice to handling this player
PP_TECH Roy, go ahead
RoyCooke Just keep patient and if he keeps playing poor
RoyCooke cards poorly you will win the money in the long
RoyCooke run! END
PP_TECH Your thoughts Grant?
Grant_P let him keep playing!!! don't discourage him from
Grant_P making this huge error....if he likes to bet and
Grant_P bluff let him do this also.....he cant win
Grant_P playing like this for long....if you don't believe
Grant_P me try it some time!!! END
junior101 it is just frustrating he always catches and he
junior101 never bets
junior101 just calls
PP_TECH Hope that helps junior101
junior101 ty
PP_TECH kitchguy, please go ahead with your question
kitchguy what kind of strategy do you have when it comes
kitchguy to playing pockets pairs and flush cards, where
kitchguy do you draw the line at playing these cards loose,
kitchguy or tight
PP_TECH Grant, please go ahead
Grant_P I always let the type of game dictate how loose I
Grant_P will play pre-flop....if the game has lots of
Grant_P limping then I will loosen up pre-flop and if the
Grant_P game is tight I will look for a stronger hand to
Grant_P start with or a weak opponent to isolate...END
PP_TECH Roy, your thoughts?
RoyCooke I agree 100% with Grant! END
PP_TECH T hanks kitchguy
kitchguy ty
PP_TECH TE_AMO, please go ahead
TE_AMO what are you thoughts on playing in 2 games at
TE_AMO once can I win twice as much
PP_TECH Roy, over to you first
RoyCooke Because playing two games takes more energy and
RoyCooke effort than one game, you lose some ability in
RoyCooke each game.......You can make 1-1/2 times your win
RoyCooke rate easily though and it can be VERY profitable
RoyCooke to play two games at once if you are a winning
RoyCooke player! END
PP_TECH Grant, anything to add?
Grant_P the second game you play should be a GREAT one to
Grant_P justify playing in it.....you will have less
Grant_P focusing both games and you will be more prone to
Grant_P error the more games you play so your earn
Grant_P potential better be juicy!!!! END
PP_TECH Thanks TE_AMO
TE_AMO thanks guys
PP_TECH Cha_Ching, go ahead with your question please.
Cha_Ching in live games, what is your number one poker tell
Cha_Ching that allows you to put a player on a hand
PP_TECH Grant, if you would care to go first
Grant_P well....I was playing this week in a pot limit
Grant_P game where my opponent wasn't protecting his hand
Grant_P when he looked at it....that was a good tell!!!!
RoyCooke LOL
Grant_P aside from this....it is clearly how my opponent
Grant_P has played their hands in the past against
Grant_P me...specifically their hand selection and
Grant_P betting patterns...END
PP_TECH Roy, your thoughts?
RoyCooke I feel if I can read my opponents emotions and
RoyCooke minds then I can put them on a pretty accurate
RoyCooke range of hands! END
Cha_Ching excellent, thank you guys. We all appreciate
Cha_Ching ty
DrScott besides pocket aces or kings, what is your
DrScott favorite hands?
DrScott and One more Please>
DrScott Do you ever show after losing?
PP_TECH Roy, go ahead
RoyCooke Aces is my favorite and is my license
RoyCooke plate...that said QQ and AKs follow...I am not a
RoyCooke sentimental player...Give me the hands that make
RoyCooke the money :-)! END
PP_TECH Grant, care to comment?
DrScott ever show your cards after a loss and why?
Grant_P well I agree with Roy...I like the big hands
Grant_P since they have the best chance of winning...END
PP_TECH Roy, thoughts on showing cards?
RoyCooke I show my cards if I think it will influence my
RoyCooke opponent to make a play I want him to make in the
RoyCooke future...But I am careful not to drive players
RoyCooke away from the game doing this! END
PP_TECH Hope that helps DrScott
DrScott ty
PP_TECH Pseudolous, go ahead with your question please
Pseudolous Mine is a two part
Pseudolous question...firstly...Grant..did you ever play at
Pseudolous FUNDTIME IN TORONTO
Pseudolous and...do you think people who go on tilt
Pseudolous are just inbred to do so...or is there a way to
Pseudolous learn the proper discipline END
PP_TECH Grant, go ahead please
Grant_P yes I did as a matter of fact....as far as the
Grant_P tilt issue goes I KNOW some people are not as
Grant_P emotionally sound as others and it does affect
Grant_P their results in poker....I believe that some
Grant_P people are just not made to play the game
Grant_P regardless of their level of intelligence...END
PP_TECH Roy, anything to add?
RoyCooke I believe that the human mind has varying degrees
RoyCooke of chemical issues that affect things like tilt
RoyCooke at the table...Some people seem to be unable to
RoyCooke control themselves. END
PP_TECH Thanks Pseudolous
Pseudolous ty
RoyCooke Good Question!
Pseudolous I used to play with grant
Grant_P HI
Pseudolous hey
Pseudolous see ya later
Grant_P ok
PP_TECH Z_Thomas54 go ahead with your question
Z_Thomas54 do you think there is any way to truly ""read" an
Z_Thomas54 opponent's "tells" at a table online? if so, any
Z_Thomas54 pointers?
Z_Thomas54 or is it just luck?
PP_TECH Grant, over to you
Grant_P well...there's not much to work with as far as
Grant_P online tells so I fall back on my knowledge of
Grant_P the player and more specifically his pre-flop
Grant_P decisions and betting patterns...END
PP_TECH Roy, anything to add?
RoyCooke I agree with Grant...I try to read their mind
RoyCooke based on what level I think their play knowledge
RoyCooke is at! END
PP_TECH Hope that helps Z_Thomas54
Z_Thomas54 thank you Roy, grant, and PP_tech!! Thx guys!
Grant_P ur welcome
PP_TECH Eagle Eyes go ahead
Eagle~Eyes do you think that you have better odds if you
Eagle~Eyes count the winning chances you have
Eagle~Eyes how important is that
Eagle~Eyes three players left
PP_TECH "Roy, over to you"
RoyCooke How big the pot is important in every poker
RoyCooke decision.......The pot lays you a price and you
RoyCooke should always keep that in mind particularly if
RoyCooke you are drawing to hand...How much you expect to
RoyCooke win when you make it vs. the chance of losing if
RoyCooke you make your hand Vs the chance of making the
RoyCooke hand all need to be factored into the equation!
RoyCooke END
PP_TECH Grant, anything to add?
Eagle~Eyes thank you
PP_TECH ALONZO21 go ahead, Eagle-Eyes was obviously happy
ALONZO21 ok
ALONZO21 the world series of poker....they show what the
ALONZO21 guys are playing, u agree with it?
ALONZO21 I wouldn't want the pros to know how I play in the
ALONZO21 future
PP_TECH Grant, your thoughts?
Grant_P it's great for TV and is probably a must to boost
Grant_P the number of viewers but it can create problems
Grant_P for the players in that their opponents get a
Grant_P great look at their decision making process and
Grant_P hand reading skills....the best players will
Grant_P adapt to all of this and counter it I'm sure....END
PP_TECH Roy, any comment?
RoyCooke It will help develop poker in a huge way and be
RoyCooke good overall for the pro players! END
ALONZO21 true...but if moneymaker ever met up with farha
ALONZO21 again I think he would get killed
PP_TECH Thanks ALONZO21
ALONZO21 thxs
PP_TECH GAH, please go ahead with your question
GAH Could you tell me what %age of online players
GAH actually win in the long run?
PP_TECH Roy, over to you
RoyCooke We do not run queries on that statistic, but I
RoyCooke would guess it is around 10%! END
PP_TECH Grant, anything to add?
Grant_P I THINK THAT NUMBER IS ABOUT RIGHT.....FEW WIN
Grant_P ANYMONEY AND EVEN FEWER WIN ENOUGH TO SURVIVE ON
Grant_P whoops....capitals
RoyCooke LOL
PP_TECH Thanks GAH.
GAH ok. thank you very much.
PP_TECH Cha_Ching, over to you
Cha_Ching outside of the obvious (hand selection and
Cha_Ching knowing how your opponent plays) what do you
Cha_Ching feel is the top thing to know on poker
PP_TECH Grant, your thoughts?
Grant_P odds etc are important but knowledge of the game
Grant_P is almost always the most important....it is
Grant_P right up there with emotional control and game
Grant_P selection in my opinion END
PP_TECH Roy?
RoyCooke I agree with Grant if you don't have good
RoyCooke strategy knowledge you can't beat the game! END
Cha_Ching excellent ty
geirel Roy are you posting a transcript of
geirel this? 3am here, some sites offer affiliates 20% or
geirel so
geirel will you consider giving that money to the
geirel players instead of the leaches affiliates?
PP_TECH Hi gierel, we have a referral program that does
PP_TECH compensate the referring player to a similar
PP_TECH degree as the affiliate type programs
PP_TECH It is structured a little differently so there is
PP_TECH a reasonable expectation of compensation to the
PP_TECH referring player.
geirel yes I know, a one time bonus will do the same
geirel thing, and not take that money out of poker give
geirel it to the players and it will be more beneficial
geirel to all
PP_TECH The player points program is also designed to
PP_TECH give back value to the individual player as well
PP_TECH comparable to an affiliate fee
PP_TECH Does that help explain?
geirel yes way less though
geirel yes I understand, but the site who will let the
geirel players be their own affiliate will get lot of
geirel LOYAL players
PP_TECH understood
geirel so any transcript?
PP_TECH We will post the transcript on UPF within 48
PP_TECH hours if that helps
PP_TECH dscoot, final question
dscoot in no limit Hold'em
dscoot how do u feel about J/5
dscoot to other comparable hands?
PP_TECH Roy, go ahead
RoyCooke I fold it and all comparable hands...You need to
RoyCooke tighten up your hand selection! END
PP_TECH Grant final thoughts?
Grant_P I love it if it comes 555 or JJJ
Grant_P END
PP_TECH Thanks everyone. Hope to do this again soon.
dscoot tx
RoyCooke CU all later
RoyCooke Thanks for coming :-)
Eagle~Eyes how do you develop a poker face?;-)
chap05 one more question?
Grant_P ok
Eagle~Eyes chap was 1st
chap05 in a live game most of the players I play with
chap05 call the blinds
chap05 would you open up your playing certain hands and
chap05 bet to make some fold their hands?
chap05 the winners seem to win on the flop with hands
chap05 like 8 5
chap05 so do you think its wise to raise on a weaker hand
chap05 just to knock those hands out
Grant_P raising pre-flop with weak hands is exactly the
Grant_P wrong strategy in this situation.....to beat this
Grant_P type of opponent you will need to raise with
Grant_P stronger hands since they will call you every
Grant_P time...END
chap05 thanks a lot
Grant_P UR WELCOME
PP_TECH Eagle_Eyes?
Eagle~Eyes how do you develop a serious poker face?
Grant_P think about all the bad beats you have
Grant_P taken....if this doesn't put a frown on your face
Grant_P you are too good for this game....play chess!!!!
Eagle~Eyes then you look mad
RoyCooke I try to create good habits...If I do it the same
RoyCooke way every time...I don't think my opponents can
RoyCooke read me! END
RoyCooke CU all later
Eagle~Eyes thank you very much I have a poker face the thank
Eagle~Eyes you again
RoyCooke Thanks All :-)
PP_TECH Thx Grant, it was a pleasure
Eagle~Eyes bye ty
Grant_P thank u
