I busted out on 5,5 was I an idiot?, rambler, 16. Dec 2003 22:04

I'm fairly new to tournament poker and i found myself playing in a single table tourney 26 dollar buy in with the winner qualifying for a bigger weekend tourney at Party. It's down to myself and one other player. I got 5,5 and went all in the other player folded the Big Blind.
The very next hand with are chip stacks almost even around 4000 I get 5,5 again and the blinds at 300-600. my opponent who has been stealing blinds all day to this point bets 1000 to start I raise all in hoping to catch him trying to steal he calls. the flops comes A,K,3,3,6 . The other guy has a king and a garbage card game over.

My question is how could I have played this differently? This is a new situation for me as i've played nearly zero heads up situations before.

Heads up 55 is a solid hand. It's possible but unlikely he has a bigger pair. Most likely you're a slight favorite to win the hand.

Since he had been stealing blinds, your all-in was correct. Hopefully he fold, but if he calls you're not in bad shape (if he does have an over-pair you just got unlucky). With the blinds at 300/600 you can't wait for premium hands to make your stand.

jaustin is correct. if the guy was stealing the blinds all day going all in was the right move.

the thing with pocket low pairs is that their "low cards". if the guy flops with a 6 or higher your toast.

the mathematically correct play is not always the right play....sure you had the better hand, but you risked all your chips on a marginal situation, I wouldn't make this play if you don't have to....you don't have to prove to the guy everytime that he can't steal blinds, that can't be your play everytime

I might have folded my 5's knowing I had the best hand but knowing i'm still in the tournament and looking for a better spot

Given that you were down to heads up, especially with the blinds that large, I think it was a good play.

With the blinds much smaller as a %age of your stacks, I would just re-raise him, not all in.

Well - not necessarily an idiot - but IMO - you did overplay 55 a bit...

Your all-in raise with the SB/Button I think was fine...but when he raised 1000 (the correct play in that position) - your play (IMO) was to call (2nd choice reraise but not allin)...

Even if his "garbage card" was a 6...you are only a 56/44 favorite...turn it into a suited J - all of a sudden he's the favorite...at best - basically its a race as long as his overcard is greater than a five - and he probably isnt calling allin with K2 (if he did - he will ultimately get what he deserves)...

When playing heads up - the cards you play become vastly different...and even though 55 is a nice hand in that situation - it isn't a hand I would want to risk my tournament on - especially twice in a row pre-flop...

thankyou everyone for the feed back. I guess maybe it wasn't especially bright to play 55 twice in a row like that but i'm still in the learning phase and i found everyone's feedback helpful and supportive. thanks again!
