When can I count on the maniacs being out?, Andrew W, 16. Dec 2003 17:44 | ||

| I made a satellite buy-in to the Party Poker Friday special, which would be the biggets buy-in I've played to date. (LIMIT HOLD EM) Over 850 entrants, I busted out at 198. top 60 paid I felt like I played pretty tight, having just re-read Sklansky's tourney book. I was surviving further than I had before in most multi-tourney (seems my only good finishes are when the top so many get the same prize - then if I make it into the money, I end up at the final table) Anyway, I really overplayed QQ and ended up short stacked, my bad. But the out hand for me really burned my butt. I was 3 away from the BB of 300, I get AK - ok, fine, it's now or never, I push all in with my 440. I didn't expect that raise to mean much to someone who was calling anyway, but if I'm going to win the hand, more chips would be good, and if I lose, I'm dead anyway. Blinds call, as does the UTG player who had called one bet already - King and rags rainbow on the flop, he bets out, others fold, he hits 2 pair on river with K5. What kind of crackhead plays K5os UTG in a tourney when the blinds start to get serious? I watched him play a bit more, and his stack swelled to over 6K, then crashed and he was out 15 positions later than me. He played all hands similar to the one I described. Had I noted he was a nutso player, and had called UTG, it wouldn't have made any difference, I would have pushed in 440 with that hand anyway. The question is not - what could I have done differently, I know where I went wrong to get in that position. The question is: was I deluded to think the maniacs were gone by the time we were down to 25% of the field? | ||

| The likelihood of being able to conclude with a high probability that the maniacs, dead money or plain idiots are gone is going to be dependant upon the length of the levels and the increases. This is not to say that you'll never find an idiot at the final table when the increases are mild and the rounds are an hour long - but you'll find alot less of them than you shall when the blinds are accelerating in 15 minute rounds. | ||

| Most maniacs either flame out early due to their reckless play, However, a few will get run over by the deck and amass enough chips to stay alive for a while (even making the final table every now and then). In your case, it was actually great that the maniac was in the hand. He bet every one out of the pot and left only 3 outs for you to lose (unfortunately he hit onw of them). Had he just checked, I'm guessing there would have been more than 3 other cards that would have beaten you (inside straights, runner-runner flush, etc.). If you're going to push all in you want a maniac who will be foolish enough to bet/bluff everyone else out leaving you two heads up. | ||

| When you're in a tourney, especially online, the best way to see if the maniacs are out or not is to sit back and watch the table play for a few hands, espeically if you get moved to a new table. Of course, you didn't have that luxury of sitting back. I'd just chalk it up to a bad beat. You did the right thing. | ||

| I hear ya man, there is nothing more frustrating than seeing a maniac win, and win, and win, and win, always with the worst hand, especially when its you he busts. This hand your a 75.5% favorite, b/c his only out is a five. Almost every tourny there is at least one maniac who the deck just hits and hits. But his time will come, he will call an all in bet with K5 for all his chips and lose eventually. Also you have to love it when this player gives you advice on how to play. You played this hand as best you could, if you didnt push in pre-flop, you certainly would have after. Good luck next time Highflyin3484k (the 19yr old poker prodigy) | ||
