Tied the knot, and a trip report, Boftx, 16. Dec 2003 14:32

Well, we did it, I have once again joined the ranks of the hen-pec..., err, married men.

My wife, Val, wanted to try playing live poker, having been doing okay at online 1/2 games. We decided to play at the Orleans on the advice of friends and what I have read here.

We found ourselves in a fun 2/4 game with superp dealers the whole time. I didn't notice any bottom-feeders at the table even though most of the players were locals. A nice touch is that we could *easily* hear people being paged for games thruout the entire casino. Val did well so far as game mechnanics go, not missing her blinds and staying with the action. However, when the very first hand she played turned out to be Q2o from UTG I knew I was in trouble. Luckily, I managed to win about half her rack myself so I still turned a profit on the session. :-) The dealers were friendly and competent, with Jordan deserving special mention (his card marker reads "The Jordan River").

I also played at the Mirage for two sessions. The first was at 11AM Sat morning and was a startup 3/6 game. I found myself at a table with only one other tourist. There were 2 obvious pros and the rest were "Tight Old Men" (the youngest was 70). This was a rogh game but a great learning experience. I was quite pleased with myself to have dropped only $10 in 2 hours of play at this meat grinder. The dealers at this session were quite competent and a pleasure to have. BTW, this would have been a winning session online with the lower rakes and no tips.

My 2nd session was at 4:30AM or so Sunday morning. This 3/6 table was about half tourists and half locals. The dealers ranged from mediocre to horrible. One dealer openly berated a player for not tipping on 3 hands (1 was a split pot, 1 was only the blinds, and the last was about 4BB). While a tip might have been in order on one of those, I think the dealer was highly unprofessional for saying anything. Most of the dealers would ignore calls of "time" and continue to say "fold or bet...l fold or bet..." even when the game was short-handed. This was not a pleasant game to be at.

Overall I greatly prefer the Orleans for play and Val and I might very well book our next stay in Vegas there.

Thanks again for the well wishes,
Jim

try some of the more out of the way places if your going for lower limit poker.

Luxor, Excalibur places like that where poker is a secondary not a main feature *still nice rooms but you get more tourist types*

Rule #1 of Poker
Circumstances alter cases
Rule #2 NEVER forget rule #1

I played at Luxor a couple of months ago when we went to see The Blue Men. I won *TWO* high hand jacpots that night, a straight flush and later 4 of a kind. I like the Luxor 2/4 game a lot, was very easy going that nite.
