PLAYING AWAY FROM HOME: HOW TO BE SAFE???, MrTeLLnj, 16. Dec 2003 10:20

I have now found many games to play around my local area, most of whom i do not know. Most of the information about where and what kind of games are through email and instant messenger.

I am wondering about the safety of playing out ( peoples houses, friend of a friends games, and so on ) and how i can protect my self from people i dont know.

Does anyone have any experiences on playing with people they do not know for the 1st time. What should i look out for and how should i protect my money in my pocket from a potential 5 against 1 give me your money or ill beat you up situation.

Ps..Please leave respectable answers, this is not a joke.

I would be cautious as to where I was going. If you do not have any clue who's house you are going to, because you met the person online, then just be careful. Do not bring a lot of money your first time, and let someone know where you are going, incase..

If you don't feel comfortable where you go, simply leave and dont go back.

MrTeLLnj,

I have never played in a game whether it be a home game or at an illegal club in Manhatten where I didn't know at least a few people. By "knowing," I mean, having met them - in person. Knowing them long enough to pass a fairly accurate judgement of their character, as well.

If you do go, make sure you inform someone about it first. Also, take a limited amount of money with you and bring a cell phone. (Safety first. Fun second).

SEE YOU AT THE TAJ or TROPICANA.

be in mind, this is just a low limit game for a buck or two and playing experience. IM not goin to a house where 100s of $$ is being in play.

but i do understand, in fact i think poker pros should write more aticles on the aspects of playing with people you don't know

I have just made a couple of contacts online and am on a couple of mailing lists for home games in my area. I have yet to attend. These games are tourneys for like a fifty dollar buy in or 1-2 kill games. I think that realistically the biggest thing you would have to worry about is not being as skilled as the other players. I wouldn't worry about walking into a game full of strangers unless it was a high limit game and you didn't know anyone and had it set up this way. Don't walk in there with like five grand but I walk around with like five hundred bucks in my pocket at all times and wouldn't give that a second thought.

If it's not high stakes don't worry about it. If it is (I don't play high stakes) I would be more worried about being outmatched or being cheated.
