Reading Hands, Roy Cooke, 16. Dec 2003 07:41

Many players understand basic fundamentals and basic math in poker......What separates the ability of those who have that level of understanding is the ability to read hands....

Players that can deduce their opponents range of hands with a good degree of reliability will make better decisions than those that cannot.

The extra expectation made/saved in situations add up greatly over time and when a good read allows you to outplay an opponent off the pot you have gained hugely in expectation.

Life is Good :-)

Roy,

This is the skill I am currently working on, however, I wonder...

Is there a level at which "Reading Hands" is difficult to the point of being near impossible?

I chatted w/ you on Planet's "Ask a Pro" and asked the question of how to improve this skill. Your reply was to watch everything that goes on at the table.

My struggle is playing 6-12 and 8-16 at the cardroom there is often so many hands that players will play (all the way through) that it's hard to narrow it down. They bet 2nd and 3rd pair hoping to catch their A or K kicker or fill the backdoor str8 or flush. Also, I can't seem to remember what the button raised w/ over the last 3 hours, let alone the other 7 players. Maybe intravenous Ginko will help w/ that :-)

Is it at this level just too loose to get an accurate read?

Thanks,

Gerard.

Hi Ostebovik

Maybe I can help you a bit with this.

I am still trying to learn and get better at reading hands, but sometimes things click and my reads are dead on.

Here's a couple of thing I do

1. I pay most attention to the players who are in the most pots. Since you will be up against them more often in a session, they are most important to get a read on. - Don't try to read the whole table at once.

2. I rate everyone against myself. For instance, if someone raises, I assume they would raise with the same standards I would. Then, if they prove that they are either looser or tighter than me its easier for me to remember. (eg. he is much looser than me). This gives a general read instead of trying to remember that seat 5 raised with A9off suit from mp with one limper infront of him.

3. Be patient. It may take a couple of hours to get a reliable read on someone, but once you do, its worth alot.

Mark

It's what I struggle with too, everyone does to some extent. There isn't as much need to read hands well in the LL games as there is in higher limits or tourneys, since in a LL game you often will have to show down the best hand anyway, and people who will play with any garbage are harder to read (but easier to take money from).

There are ways to read bad players though, and even if all you're able to do is know whether they're too loose or too tight it can be very helpful.

And try to not remember exactly which hands someone raised with in what position, but what kind of hands (group them). Try to remember what the lowest pocket pair they've raised with was, that alone is a good indicator of how loose a player is (bad players fall in love with certain hands, any pair or suited anything are common).
