Hello, my first post here.

I've been playing hold'em for about 5 months. I've read 4-5 books and played about 200 hrs internet and about 400hrs casino (Los Angeles). At the beginning I only played group 1 and 2 hands and was up about $1k from 2/4 holdem. Then I started to get confident and played looser...K8o, Q9o, etc.... My bankroll went down to near zero last month.

I went back this weekend after re-reading some chapters and thinking about hands I lose and hands I am too scared to bet on when I hit the flop (A4o and hit the A, K8o and hit the king). So I stopped playing these. I played 30hrs this weekend at 2/4 and was up 170. (Even though I lost $150 at NL in 20 minutes first). I did have 2 hour sessions where I did not play a single hand. I was a total rock.

What I've learned is the best strategy I've found so far in loose Cali 2/4 is to only play premium hands and purposely try to get people to fold preflop. You WILL get callers no matter what you do. Even after 12hrs at one table where I was sure to show my premium hand every time I lost or folded, I was still called with medium hands while pre-flop raising. The garbage hands folded, which was my goal. When I have AK, I dont want 86 playing against me, I want Ax and Kx playing.

Anyways, just some things for beginners to think about, and veterans to comment on. Thanks.

Dont worry your not the only one who suffers from "cant fold an ace pre-flop". I play alot online and home games (too young to play in a casino) but it never fails you will always have at least one usually more people who play A 4o, K 6o, Q7.. etc, I have always refered to these as "painted rags or face rags". I dont know why but even when I first started out playing, I never wanted to play these types of hands, and its kind of gotten into my mind so now when I see people play them I kinda cringe (I know this sounds stupid) but its like how can you play a hand like that.

Say you decide to play A4o, you have to ask your self what you want to hit... say the flop comes down A K 8, wow, you caught the ONLY thing you were counting on the flop... an ace, with a horrible kicker. Think about it this way... what ace can you beat? you can only beat A 2 or A 3, in which most cases its a split pot, so your profit from playing these types of hands is terrible. Its basically the same thing with K 8... flop K 10 2... you have top pair but your only going to beat K 7 and lower, and solid players dont play those types of hands.

Damn I ramble to much, oh well.

It's amazing isn't it. On a 3/6 game this weekend I had AK on the button. I raised it pre-flop. Flop came up A8x. I bet it out to the river and someone showed me K8... then he says that he thought I was bluffing. Wow! this guy was sitting at the table with me for about 4 hours already and hadn't seen me bluff all night. What was this guy thinking? I wouldn't bluff on this table. Someone was always going to call me on it. I had to show my hand every time I went to the river. On a table like this there is no reason to bluff. You don't have to, they are going to just pay you off everytime you get dealt a good hand.
