Hey all, allow me to begin by saying thank you.
I am not even sure what I am thanking you for, but I appreciate this forum.
I have been playing online hold'em for about 4 months now. I first read a little, then I lurked on this forum for a little time, then I decided to put money into an online site and play a little. Over time I have deposited $350 (300 in the first month), and watched the swings as I played. my bankroll fluctuated between $25 and $250.
I figured that I can easily spend $350 on a 1 semester class, namely my poker education. Online provides me the opportunity to see many hands over time, at low limit, I expect to learn how cards play fairly cheaply. As a bonus, the 1/2 tables I play (UB) at are at a competition level I can learn at. And learning, I am.

Realize, I dont post much here. My posts have not been "I played this and what went wrong" There was no way. People talk about leaks in their games. I know I have leaks, but I have no understanding of MY GAME. How do I play? Am I loose, tight, weak, agressive? Really I have no perspective. I have only played for 4 months. I am only beginning to understand how I am playing. Never mind about making adjustments, how can you adjust if you do not have a frame of reference? I am beginning to see, just barely. Thanks to this forum. I now have vague understandings of how the cards play out, what hands are worth chasing and when to lay them down. Again vague, but the fog is lifting slowly. Only now can I read hand analysis and really understand some of the unspoken implications. Nothing solid, just clearing understanding. This forum provides an atmosphere that is conducive to my osmatic (via osmosis) form of learning. Thank you because...

Until last evening, I never played live poker before. Thanks to discourse on this forum, I won. I turned $100 into $340 and it was the tacit support of everything that is discussed on the is forum that made it possible.
I live in Oregon and the closeset hold'em I can find is at Spirit Mountain Casino. Nice place in the coast range. After two weks of negotiating the time off from my wife and newborn, I headed out around 4pm. It is 1 1/4 hr drive from my home. All teh way down, I kept on going over a few things. Psyching myself up to memorize hole cards, follow the action, poker face, etc. I arrive at teh casino, pull out $200 from my ATM and find the poker room. Then, I sign up on the wait list and check my jacket. At 5:30 I was sitting at my first live poker game, my heart racing, unfamiliar environment. I miss the comfort of my anoynomus computer...
I sat down ready to post. 3/6 game with 1/3 blinds. $1 went to the bad beat JP. Rake about $1/ round. I sit down with the button to my right. Tried to post (oops), shot down by a grumpy lady two to my left. I know this. I sit tight. The button passes abnd I try to post again. No post in this game, I just get some cards. Goodie. Kind of embarrased, but unflustered. After a round or two I play a hand or two. See a few flops. Not much happens. I begin to realize that I am the agressor. I see spots and take a little pot here and there, i'll bet but fold to a raise. Then I get JJ in LP. Raise bet call raise when the board trips 9s. yes teh outer guy had teh last 9 so my 9s full of Js dosen't hold up. Oh well I am down to $30. I sit back and tighten up. I made many of tehclasic blunder. I heard nature call and tried to fild my 25 on the blind, then the guy to my left said I could (and should) check...blush... yeah I know better, but I gotta go... flop 922... I bet out and reraise. The table calling because I had a folding hand. The guy who talke me into staying lost 21 bucks to me lol. I miss bet so many times that the table mantra becam... er thats six. I always announced my action so to problems occured. So here was this green kid (I am 34), mis-betting, folding blinds, unsure when to post, fumbeling chips as a tight aggrsive strategy won big pots at showdown an stoll little pots with confident well placed aggression. I left after about 2 1/2 hours because I felt the tables good nature start to turn against me and I did have a deadline. I brought in for a rack and left with three and a half. I felt somewhat in control of my game even though the mechanics could use some work.

My experiment was a success. The education is fantastic. As of last night. I am now in the black and have a real "live poker bank roll" that is funded by my poker winnings.

B & Ms rule. The 3/6 game was much softer than the 1/2 games I play on UB. Oh BTW... teh crazy rigged flops/rivers that happen on line DEFINATLLTY happen in live poker. It was a gas to watch
I hqve to go.
Thank you
Dupree.

First of all, congrats!

It's always great to hear a story of the new poker thrill feeling, if you catch my drift. I like the touch about convincing your wife to let you go and try this out.

I played in my first World Series of Poker this past April/May and was able to experience a lot of first time feelings again even though I've been playing for 9 years (only 2 years as a pro).

Keep up the good work!

Congrats, just remember that there's a lot of luck in turning $100 into $340 at one sitting. Those results will be repeated rarely, if ever. The real key is to continue playing your best poker when you're getting lousy cards and your good hands are being sucked-out upon.

Remember...it's one long game.

(But that doesn't change the fact that short-term winning streaks feel great!!)

Excellent words of advice, MK. I agree that I cannot expect these results to be repeated all that often. I did get a bit of luck to pull it off, but the table was perfect for me. They all could smell my newness. Like I said, I made many newbie blunders. The thing was that I could play. I raised with stuff worth raising with, made some decent calls, lost big to quads. I do think that table thought that I could not play at all, so I surprised them when I kept winning. My table image was such that whenever I raised the table groaned because they all knew that there was a good chance they are just paying me off. Anyway I know beginners luck when I see it. I saw all sorts of weird hands being made. There is no doubt in my mind that the poker gods saw it fit to allow me a big win to see what I do from here.

I am a firm believer that all forms of gambling are truly games against one self. We all have these internal levers (as I call them) that we must monitor and operate to be successful in any $$ game. One lever controls the ""It is rude to leave a game when I am up" mechanism. Another lever controls "I know I am beat, but its just another three bucks to call, what the heck" Still another is "I must make up for what I lost, I can't leave yet" These are all traps that we have inside us to varying degrees. The mechanisms (complexes) are always in motion and it is up to us to apply the brakes on these locomotive-like impulses. Thus the metaphor of the levers, they are the brakes. One lever is the tight/loose one. Loose is full steam ahead, and I typically play with that throttled back. I am somewhat tight by nature, but prone to excursions into loose as a goose.

This game in particular I had a decent sense of what cards were good enough to play, when and how. So yes luck, and table "selection" were indispensable keys to my success. My experiment was a success. The experiment was to learn the basics of how the cards play out (via online), enough so such that I can survive at a live table. Aside from my clumsy play, I think I did all right as I did stay focused on my game (to the detriment of my mechanics) despite the butterflies and the newness.

One last thing about luck. A skilled player can do ok without the abundance of luck an unskilled player requires. No one can do well without any luck. My belief (and mantra) is "Just a little luck is all you need" Without it you might never see any decent cards or your pair of Aces just lost for the 15th time running.

In short, thanks to this forum, I was able to go into the game with some understanding of what to expect.

As my game improves, I will better understand my game so that I can ask more pointed questions in my quest to improve.

Full steam ahead.
Dupree
