tournament setup HELP!, brandon, 15. Dec 2003 08:51

i am playing in a NL HE tourney on thursday. the pot is getting big and the person running it has never run a tournament before. needless to say these are the kinds of players we all dream about playing against for big money.

its 25 people, $75 buy-in, first takes home $975 and4 other places pay out (4 and 5 get buy in back). he increased the field from 20 to 25 because he thinks for some reason five handed at 5 tables the the way to run a tournament. i spoke with him on the phone this morning (cause he wants me to bring him the buy in 3 days in advamce?!?) and while chatting i tried to explain that:
1. playing 5 handed at 5 tables makes no sense.
2. you should keep the tables even when possible before you get to the final table.
3. you should not have to win your table to make it to the final.
4. you should get more then $65 in chips, when blinds start at 1/2
5. the blinds should not "go back" to 5/10 when the final table starts.
he didnt understand the reasons why things are usually run differently. i guess i stumbled a little through the explinations. i understand them better than i can articulate them to someone who hasnt thought about tournament structure before.

i know its his tournament and his rules, but i am going to see him later and hope to give it a go explaining things clearly to him about how and why tournaments are run the way they are. i could use a little guidance from the UPF community anwsering these questions:

1. Is this tournament structure of tournament to my advantage or disadvantage, being more or less the only experianced tournmanent player?

2. how would you explain to this person the reasons behind setting up the tournament 7 or 8 handed, keeping the tables even, starting off with 100 or so in chips, and so on?

hope you all dont mind adding your two cents. a few replies would be great!

Okay, here's my 2 cents. Well actually, it's somebody elses 2 cents! Under the category of News, Views, and Rules is a thread titled "Hosting A Tournament". If you go back just a bit you should find it. There was a reply post in that thread written by SASO and he covered a great deal regarding home tournaments and set-ups. I think you'll find it to be quite helpful too.

Good luck :-)

I played a similar home tournament a few months back. Very frustrating, to say the least. We had 6 tables of 6 guys. You had to win your table to make the final table (stupid). I made my table to 3-handed, got wired aces, and lost to a guy who called with wired tens; he caught his ten on the turn. Presto, I was done.

I guess you'd have to ask yourself what I asked myself: "Is it worth paying the money to play in a tournament that is all screwy like that?" If there will be side action, for those out of the tourney, it might be worth it. I cleaned up in another single table tournament and a regular ring game when the "final table" was being played, so I ended up winning my buy-in back and then some, so it wasn't all for naught.

Brandon, I have hosted a couple tournaments the size that you are talking about. I have the information and structure that I used if you would like it. Email me at brentpoker@yahoo.com and I will send it to you. On the table note, I would say 3 tables of 8 would be best for a home game. Everyone has 8 man tables and it is easy to balance.
