mid pairs in tourney, TraderVic, 14. Dec 2003 20:39

how do you play a mid sized pair in a tournament ? Say you're dealth a pair like 9-9 or 8-8 . I usually raise preflop 3*blind and get it heads up. If the flop shows any paint it seems I should release if the other guy bets(I put him on A-K down to AJ). With no paint, I usually bet and if I get reraised I figure the guy might have hit trips so I let them go(alot of guys will call a raise with 6-6 for example; they put me on two overcards and hope I don't hit ). What should be my general strategy for playing these pairs?

Sometimes, if you were the preflop raiser and you succeed in getting it heads-up, you should "take a stab" even if the flop has overcards. You can pick up a lot of small pots this way.

The reason is that those overcards might be overcards to his hand as well, and since you were the raiser, he will often think the flop helped you. If he calls or raises you are through with the hand most likely unless you put him on a draw.

In the past I've had a lot of problems with this as well, but I've been doing better in these situations recently. It really depends on the type of player you are playing against. If you are first to act and check to him, will he bet with nothing hoping you'll fold? If you bet with your pair, will he release immediately if he doesn't hit any part of the flop? What are his likely holdings? Did he just call before the flop or did he reraise you? Were there 2 overcards or just one and what were they? Were there 2 to a flush on the flop? A lot of these things are pretty important just like the type of player your opponent is. Typically I like to 'take a stab' as well on the flop and see if I can get my opponent to fold. I'd bet close to the size of the pot, but then again, I probably wouldn't raise preflop with 8's, but I would with 9's and up. I don't see the point of raising with small to mid pairs unless you really think you're going to fold off most everybody else or get some heads-up action. Then, it would be a smart play. If you don't raise pre-flop and there's a small flop, you can bet out knowing you most likely have the best hand (as long somebody didn't get really lucky on you).
